Book Description
A complete calculation of the hydrodynamic variables for shock Mach numbers up to and beyond the point where hydrogen becomes completely ionized is prescribed. A set of curves for initial pressures of 0.001 and 0.01 At. was calculated in February 1957. Recent experimental work at lower pressures has made it necessary to revise the original calculations with the addition of a set of curves for 0.0001 At. initial pressure. The curves include density ratio across the shock wave, the temperature behind the shock wave and the degree of ionization. The first graph runs from a shock Mach number of 1 to 70 while the second graph continues from a shock Mach number of 60 to 200, a region where the hydrogen may be considered completely ionized. (Author).

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323147852
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 479

Book Description
Physics of Shock Waves and High-Temperature Hydrodynamic Phenomena, Volume II presents interpretations of the physical basis of shockwaves and high-temperature hydrodynamic phenomena and gives practical guidance to those who work with these subjects in science and modern technology. This volume contains chapters discussing such topics as the shockwave structure in gases; physical and chemical kinetics in hydrodynamic processes; the radiative phenomena in shock waves and in strong explosions in the air; thermal waves and shockwaves in solids; and self-similar processes in gasdynamics. Physicists, engineers, researchers, and professors and students in the field of the physical sciences will find the book very educational.

Electric Propulsion Development

Electric Propulsion Development PDF Author: Ernst Stuhlinger
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323163386
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 763

Book Description
Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics, Volume 9: Electric Propulsion Development covers the proceedings of the Second Electric Propulsion Conference of the American Rocker Society, held in Berkeley, California on March 14-16, 1962. The conference focuses on the existing problems in electric propulsion and their possible solutions. This book is organized into four sections encompassing 35 chapters. The first section deals with the thermodynamics of arcs; the problems of heat and momentum transfer; the chemical processes within arcs; the arc system materials; and the arc jet design problems. The second section considers the problems of ion systems, the various ion sources, and the neutralization of ion beams. This section also looks into the basic ionization processes, the production and charging of heavy particles, the corrosive properties of cesium, and the ion-optical designs. The third section describes various plasma systems, including helical transmission lines, pulsed pinch accelerators, coaxial systems, and j x B accelerators. The theoretical analyses of these systems are briefly examined. The fourth section includes papers on flight testing of electric propulsion models, on vertical rocket probes, and on satellites, This section also discusses some advanced concepts in electric propulsion, such as air scooping during ascent through the atmosphere, systems design and optimization, and planetary and interplanetary missions. This book is of great value to physicists, space engineers and designers, as well as researchers in the fields of astronautics and aeronautics.
