Excerpt: ...with zeal, and watchfulness; he could not understand the debate, which indeed was carried on at a distance too great to be easily heard, even if the language had been familiar; but he was always on the alert, and now and then conferring with men who had straggled out of the assembly; at last he found an opportunity of making a proposal, which at once produced immense sensation; he offered, on my behalf, that if the tribe should bear themselves loyally towards me, and take my party, and my baggage in safety to the other bank of the river, I should give them a " teskeri," or written certificate of their good conduct, which might avail them hereafter in the hour of their direst need. This proposal was received, and instantly accepted by all the men of the tribe, there present, with the utmost enthusiasm. I was to give the men, too, a " baksheish," that is, a present of money, which is usually made upon the conclusion of any sort of treaty; but, although the people of the tribe were so miserably poor, they seemed to look upon _ the pecuniary part of the arrangement as a matter quite trivial in comparison with the " teskeri." Indeed the sum which Dthemetri promised them was extremely small, and not the slightest attempt was made to extort any further re" ard. The Council now broke up, and most of the men rushed madly towards me, and overwhelmed me with vehement gratulations; they caressed my boots with much affection, and my hands were severely kissed. The Arabs now went to work in right earnest to effect the passage of the river. They had brought with them a great number of the skins which they use for carrying water in the desert; these they filled with air, and fastened several of them to small...

Book Description
The book is a travel adventure novel by English travel writer and historian Alexander William Kinglake. The book proved to be a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. His witty sense of humor present the book not just as a travel account of his different destinations but also about how he navigates through the situations he comes across.

Book Description
Excerpt from Eothen, Or, Traces of Travel: Brought Home From the East When you first entertained the idea of travelling in the East, you asked me to send you an outline of the tour which I had made, in order that you might the better be able to choose a route for yourself. In answer to this re quest, I gave you a large French map, on which the course of my journeys had been carefully marked; but I did not conceal from myself, that this was rather a dry mode for a man to adopt, when he wished to impart the results of hfs experience to a dear and intimate friend. Now, long be fore the period of your planning an Oriental tour, I had intended to write some account of my Eastern Travels. I had, indeed, begun the task, and had failed; I had begun it a second time, and failing again, had abandoned my at tempt with a sensation of utter distast'e. I was unable to speak out, and chiefly, I think, for this reason - that I knew not to whom I was speaking. It might be you, or, perhaps, our Lady of Bitterness, who would read my story; or it might be some member of the Royal Statistical Socie y, and how on earth was I to write in a way that would do for all three?
