This book Innovations and the Environment aims to review the state of knowledge and to provide an empirical basis for the development and use of new technologies, products and services to reduce the impact of human activities on environmental quality. This is at the core of the debate on economics and the environment. The message is optimistic. Advances in thinking and actions make it possible to maintain high environmental quality at reasonable costs, sometimes even having a positive effect on corporate results. The progress is by no means automatic. Risk taking by entrepreneurs, managers and policy makers is necessary. The idea to write a book about innovations and the environment was born during discussions with Professor Han Brezet who was convinced of the importance of this subject for engineering students. This is because he has found many stories about the successes and failures of environmental technologies and even more on the impact of technologies on environmental qualities, but no reviews on technology and the mindset of entrepreneurship to explain the forces that drive innovations for sustainable development.

The problems related to the process of industrialisation such as biodiversity depletion, climate change and a worsening of health and living conditions, especially but not only in developing countries, intensify. Therefore, there is an increasing need to search for integrated solutions to make development more sustainable. The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda officially came into force. These goals cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals comprehensively addresses the SDGs in an integrated way. It encompasses 17 volumes, each one devoted to one of the 17 SDGs. This volume addresses SDG 9, namely “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation” and contains the description of a range of terms, to allow a better understanding and foster knowledge about it. This book presents a set of papers on the state of the art of knowledge and practices about three important aspects of sustainable development, infrastructure, industrialization and innovation. It focuses on the support of cleaner technologies, enhanced scientific research, domestic technology development and universal internet access. This report summarizes a workshop organized by the National Academies' Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability. The workshop brought together a select group of program managers from the public and private sectors to discuss specific cases of linking knowledge to action in a diverse set of integrated observation, assessment, and decision support systems. Workshop discussions explored a wide variety of experiments in harnessing science and technology to goals of promoting development and conserving the environment.
