Isotopes of the Earth's Hydrosphere

Isotopes of the Earth's Hydrosphere PDF Author: V.I. Ferronsky
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400728557
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 626

Book Description
This book covers the distribution, hydrochemistry and geophysics of the naturally occurring stable isotopes namely: hydrogen, oxygen and radioactive tritium, carbon and other cosmogenic and radiogenic isotopes of the uranium-thorium series, in the oceans and in atmosphere, the earth's surface and ground water. The use of environmental isotopes in the three main areas of natural waters is discussed: origin, dynamics and residence time in natural reservoirs. The origin of the hydrosphere is examined in the light of isotopic, new cosmochemical and recent theoretical results. The book will be of interest to scientists and researchers who use environmental isotopes in solving scientific and practical problems in hydrology, hydrogeology, oceanography, meteorology, hydrogeochemistry and cosmochemistry. Lecturers, students and postgraduates in these fields will also find it useful.

Isotope Hydrology

Isotope Hydrology PDF Author: Joel R. Gat
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1848164742
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
Within the discipline of environmental sciences, the stable-isotope methodology is being increasingly used, especially in the study of the water cycle and of paleo-climatology. This book reviews the natural variability of stable isotopes in the hydrosphere, describing the physico-chemical basis of isotope fractionalism, and applying this knowledge to natural waters as they move through the hydrologic cycle from the ocean to the atmosphere, the biosphere and the lithosphere. It focuses on the processes at the surface-atmosphere and land-biosphere-atmosphere interfaces, since these are the sites of major changes in isotope composition. In response to the increasing awareness of our changing climate, a discussion on the global view of the changing water cycle, in the past and future, concludes up the presentation.

Isotopes in the Water Cycle

Isotopes in the Water Cycle PDF Author: Pradeep K. Aggarwal
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9781402066719
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 404

Book Description
Environmental isotope and nuclear techniques provide unmatched insights into the processes governing the water cycle and its variability. This monograph presents state of the art applications and new developments of isotopes in hydrology, environmental disciplines and climate change studies. Coverage ranges from the assessment of groundwater resources in terms of recharge and flow regime to studies of the past and present global environmental and climate changes.

Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology

Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology PDF Author: Ian D. Clark
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1482242915

Pages : 343

Book Description
Groundwater is an increasingly important resource to human populations around the world, and the study and protection of groundwater is an essential part of hydrogeology - the subset of hydrology that concentrates on the subsurface. Environmental isotopes, naturally occurring nuclides in water and solutes, have become fundamental tools for tracing

Book Description
Proceedings of a symposium, Vienna, 19-23 April 1993. Natural isotopes are among the most powerful tools for investigating past and current environmental changes. In particular, stable isotopes have proved to be very useful proxy indicators of climate related parameters such as surface air temperature, relative humidity of the atmosphere and amount of precipitation, whereas radioactive isotopes are widely used as a dating tool. The release of radionuclides during nuclear bomb tests permitted studies of the dynamics of transport and mixing processes in the atmosphere. It also allowed a global tracer experiment on the hydrological and carbon cycles, which substantially contributed to better understanding of these two vital compartments of the global ecosystem. A wide spectrum of themes was discussed at the symposium, covering both the 'present' and the 'past' of the global atmosphere/hydrosphere system. Case studies as well as methodological aspects of various isotope techniques applied in both areas of research were presented.

Isotope Techniques in the Study of Environmental Change

Isotope Techniques in the Study of Environmental Change PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 960

Book Description
Proceedings of a symposium on Isotope Techniques in the Study of Past and Current Environmental Changes in the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere, Vienna, 14-18 April 1997. The symposium was structured in five sessions of oral presentations, a poster session and a round table discussion that focused on trends and future requirements in isotope hydrology and on applications in climate and environmental research. The major themes covered by the presentations included the use of isotopic tracers in studies of atmospheric and hydrospheric changes and of human impacts on water and the environment. Special emphasis was placed on isotopic archives of climatic and environmental change. Some contributions addressed new technical approaches.
