The essays in this volume are concerned with early printed narrative texts in Western Europe. The aim of this book is to consider to what extent the shift from hand-written to printed books left its mark on narrative literature in a number of vernacular languages. Did the advent of printing bring about changes in the corpus of narrative texts when compared with the corpus extant in manuscript copies? Did narrative texts that already existed in manuscript form undergo significant modifications when they began to be printed? How did this crucial media development affect the nature of these narratives? Which strategies did early printers develop to make their texts commercially attractive? Ancient declamation—the practice of delivering speeches on the basis of fictitious scenarios—defies easy categorization. It stands at the crossroads of several modern disciplines. It is only within the past few decades that the full complexity of declamation, and the promise inherent in its study, have come to be recognized. This volume, which contains thirteen essays from an international team of scholars, engages with the multidisciplinary nature of declamation, focusing in particular on the various interactions in declamation between rhetoric, literature, law, and ethics. Contributions pursue a range of topics, but also complement each other. Separate essays by Brescia, Lentano, and Lupi explore social roles—their tensions and expectations—as defined through declamation. With similar emphasis on historical circumstances, Quiroga Puertas and Tomassi consider the adaptation of rhetorical material to frame contemporary realities. Schwartz draws attention to the sometimes hazy borderline between declamation and the courtroom. The relationship between laws and declamation, a topic of abiding importance, is examined in studies by Berti, Breij, and Johansson. Dr. Mirkovi, professor of Ancient History at Belgrade University analyzes the colonate of the Later Roman Empire as a historical phenomenon. The status of coloni (tenant farmers who were legally free) represents as much a legal as a sociological problem; although they were free, coloni were tied to another's land-often for a large portion of their lives. Rejecting the most widely accepted theory today that imperial fiscal policy that began with the emperor Diocletian in the 290s created the bound colonate & limited the right of the coloni to leave the land they cultivated, the author traces the development of this institution to the economic condition of the Early Empire. Using the legal, literary & papyrological evidence, she stresses two facts as significant in limiting the freedom of coloni: a) the relation of the colonus to the landlord, b) the fiscal obligations he endures. Mirkovi_ cites extensively the law of Constantine, C.Th. V 17,1 as the crucial text in discussions of the dependent colonate. She emphasizes continuity in the development of the colonate & that the general principle of binding to the soil can be applied to the agricultural population at large.
