Collective Memory Narratives in Contemporary Culture

Collective Memory Narratives in Contemporary Culture PDF Author: Antonella Pocecco
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031419219
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
Starting from the central importance of memory in contemporary societies, this book encourages a transdisciplinary reflection on how the “presentification of the past” is never a simple reenactment but corresponds to the interaction between memory and cultural sensitiveness, present beliefs and needs, expectations, and forecasts for the future. It studies cultural (re)construction through collective stories, including academic debates, media narratives, collective mobilizations, state narratives of history, architectural reconstructions, and artistic expressions. It looks at how technological innovations have profoundly changed the practices of conservation and dissemination of collective memory, with particular reference to cultural digitization. Finally, it shows that the relevance and selection of events, the organization of connections and cross-references between past, present, and future, as well as the importance of diversified collective imaginaries are the keys to narrative constructions of memory that prove to be sensitive and decisive for its continuity and its intergenerational transmission. This interdisciplinary collection is for students and scholars of the social sciences, cultural studies, and the humanities interested in memory studies.

World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality

World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality PDF Author: Gesine Müller
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110641135
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
From today’s vantage point it can be denied that the confidence in the abilities of globalism, mobility, and cosmopolitanism to illuminate cultural signification processes of our time has been severely shaken. In the face of this crisis, a key concept of this globalizing optimism as World Literature has been for the past twenty years necessarily is in the need of a comprehensive revision. World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality: Beyond, Against, Post, Otherwise offers a wide range of contributions approaching the blind spots of the globally oriented Humanities for phenomena that in one way or another have gone beyond the discourses, aesthetics, and political positions of liberal cosmopolitanism and neoliberal globalization. Departing basically (but not exclusively) from different examples of Latin American literatures and cultures in globalized contexts, this volume provides innovative insights into critical readings of World Literature and its related conceptualizations. A timely book that embraces highly innovative perspectives, it will be a mustread for all scholars involved in the field of the global dimensions of literature.

Baron de Vastey and the Origins of Black Atlantic Humanism

Baron de Vastey and the Origins of Black Atlantic Humanism PDF Author: Marlene L. Daut
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137470674
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
Focusing on the influential life and works of the Haitian political writer and statesman, Baron de Vastey (1781-1820), in this book Marlene L. Daut examines the legacy of Vastey’s extensive writings as a form of what she calls black Atlantic humanism, a discourse devoted to attacking the enlightenment foundations of colonialism. Daut argues that Vastey, the most important secretary of Haiti’s King Henry Christophe, was a pioneer in a tradition of deconstructing colonial racism and colonial slavery that is much more closely associated with twentieth-century writers like W.E.B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, and Aimé Césaire. By expertly forging exciting new historical and theoretical connections among Vastey and these later twentieth-century writers, as well as eighteenth- and nineteenth-century black Atlantic authors, such as Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, William Wells Brown, and Harriet Jacobs, Daut proves that any understanding of the genesis of Afro-diasporic thought must include Haiti’s Baron de Vastey.

19 & 20 PDF Author: Colectivo Situaciones
Publisher: Minor Compositions
ISBN: 9781570272165
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In the heat of an economic and political crises, people in Argenita took to the streets on December 19, 2001, shouting, Que se vayan todos! These words -- All of them out! -- hurled by thousands banging pots and pans, struck at every politician, economist, and journalist. Colectivo Situaciones wrote this book in the heat of that December's aftermath. Ten years have passed, yet the book remains and relevant and as fresh as the day it came out. Multitudes of citizens from different countries have learned their own ways to chant Que se vayan todos!; from Iceland to Tunisia, from Spain to Greece, from Tahrir Square to Zuccotti Park. Colectivo Situaciones' practice resonates with everyone seeking to think current events and movements, and through that to build a new world in the shell of the old.
