Numerous volumes have been written on education in the United States, treating the subject historically, philosophically, pedagogically, and from other points of view. Most of these books have handled the topic from the standpoint of their respective authors in a more or less exhaustive manner, as far as that part of education which pertains to civil occupations, professions, and accomplishments is concerned, but none of them have even given a glimpse into those features which deal with military preparedness, national defense, and the thousand and one things necessary to make an educated military man, professional or amateur. A good illustration of this is contained in Doctor Andrew S. Draper's book, "American Education," in which the entire space given to military education is contained in the following lines: "The Military and Naval Academies are wholly subject to the Secretaries of War and Navy, and no distinct schoolman carries the light of his guild into the recesses of their affairs." A preface is no place for criticism. Let the reader draw his own conclusions. The writer has attempted in the accompanying pages to contribute a volume on a subject woefully neglected yet one which is very important, and it is hoped his efforts will serve in a small measure to bring the matter more prominently before the public. The more the public learns of our military system the more popular will the military service become with the masses. The average American citizen sadly lacks knowledge of the Army, its methods, its duties, and its educational system. No attempt will be made to charge this ignorance to any particular class of our citizens, for college graduates, educators, business men and professional men, with a few shining exceptions, have equally neglected to inform themselves on the workings of this very important institution of our Government. We nevertheless believe it to be a safe and well grounded estimate, and one which it will be well for ourselves and our government to keep steadily in view. The sanguine hopes cherished not long since in regard to the strong and widely di 'used Union element in the South, have now for the most part disappeared - vanished in tenues auras and we have at length awoke to the perception of the stern truth, that when we shall have crushed this. Rebellion in its strongholds, conquered and dispersed its armies, and in icted just punishment upon its wicked leaders and promoters, it will be necessary for us, for a series of years, to maintain the cause of order and the rights of the Constitution in the revolted districts, by the strong arm of the national power. No sane and re ecting person can doubt this. Here alone then we have an immediate, existing demand for a large national army, not for three months, nor three years, but most probably for the lifetime of this generation. But every sign observable in the political horizon, eastward, seems too truly to presage the rapid approach of another and a more serious demand upon our military and naval resources. We are 'not alarmists, and still less are we of the number of those who, from whatever motive, would seek to foster and foment a war with one or other of the European nations. Should any of those nations dare to inter fere with, or assail us, our voice and pen should be among the first uplifted to rouse our people to revenge the insult and repel the insolent intrusion. But, so long as no such just cause for indignation is afforded by the' commission of overt acts, it seems to us to be no less wicked than foolish, to attempt, as certain reckless politicians and public writers have attempted, to excite amongst the people at large, a feeling of intense hostility against foreign nations. The object of such attempts is, we are well aware, to divert the passions of the now divided North and South into the common channel of hatred of the foreigner, and to heal domestic dissension by means of a foreign. Excerpt from Army Lessons in English: Military Stories The subject matter contained herein was prepared at the Recruit Educational Center, Camp Upton, New York, which has been in operation since May 1, 1919. The normal length of the course at the Recruit Educational Center is four months. The students are all men who have been enlisted as illiterate and non-English speaking. The men are grouped together in an organization consisting of two battalions. The program consists of about three and one-half hours' military drill and three hours' actual school work. The full power of the military control is used to compel the maximum attendance. Several methods of teaching have been tried out and discarded until gradually the present method has been evolved. The course was originated and developed by Captain Garry C. Myers, Sanitary Corps, Director of Education, who was assisted in the work of developing details by practically the entire corps of instructors of the Recruit Educational Center. Space does not permit mentioning the names of the individuals concerned, but to all of them the Recruit Educational Center acknowledges due credit. The military stories were originated and developed by First Lieutenant Walter H. Wells, Infantry, under the supervision of Major Louis T. Byrne, Infantry, United States Army, commanding the center. This course is being sent out with the belief that it will be found of great assistance in teaching men throughout the service, who (while they have been classified as literate when they entered the service) require a better knowledge of the English language to enable them to perform properly the duties of a soldier.
