Book Description
Excerpt from Modern English Essays, Vol. 1 This new stringency of the periodical page was yet more likely to be felt in a magazine like The Cornhill, which set out to be entertaining first and intellectual afterwards. In its earlier volumes there are solid contributions from Leslie Stephen, who was its editor for some years, Matthew Arnold, and other major essayists; but in style and attack, and economy of expression, they mark a change. And when we come to the weekly reviews, and dis cover men of the Old quarterly calibre, men like Leslie Stephen's elder brother, F itzjames Stephen (who became a famous judge), adapting themselves to a middle article, and making it more damaging than a quarterly review, we realise that the critical headquarters have shifted from the quarterly to the monthly and weekly reviews. Book Description
Excerpt from The Oxford English Prize Essays, Vol. 1: A New Edition Brought Down to the Present Time The early productions of men distinguished in public life, who have by the force of successful talent attained unto fame and fortune, have ever awakened anxious curiosity. In submitting the Oxford English Prize Essays to the public, it is conceived that a very generally diffused feeling of the kind will be gratified. The inquiries that have for many years been made after the Essays to which this brief advertisement is prefixed, have induced the publisher to collect the present volumes, which he now offers to the public in the belief that he is adding an elegant and agreeable work to our literature, and without any further introduction than the expression of his grateful thanks to those noblemen and gentlemen who have favoured him with copies of their essays. Book Description
Excerpt from The Oxford English Prize Essays, Vol. 3 But if drawn from the hope of posthumous regard, there is still one ground upon which nature will make her last stand - the solicitude of holding a place in the remembrance, at least, of others. Our acquired habits of thinking cause us to recoil from the prospect of Oblivion, which is annihilation in one Of its most dreary and de grading forms. TO be totally forgotten, to have our remains blended indiscriminately with the dust, without a record or a place, is so intolerable even to the minds of the lowest order, that the desire to avoid it has been able to wring from want some portion of its scanty supplies, and extort a provision from the rapacious habits of vice. To provide a coffin or a tombstone, the poor man will deny his need, and the prodigal his usual indulgence. Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of English Essays The Essay, as a distinct literary form, may be defined as a prose composition of moderate length, dealing with one subject, and in such a way as to give free expression to the personality of the writer. The term has, indeed, been loosely applied to a wide variety of prose works, e such as the philosophical treatise, the historical or bio graphical monograph, and the brief anonymous article of the newspaper. But the essay, in'the' stricter sense in which the word is employed in this volume, is always personal, always in some degree autobiographical. The essayist is, in some special sense, writing Of himself. The essay thus, in this respect, corresponds in prose with the lyric in verse. Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of English Essays (1600-1900) Of the word Essay it is necessary to say some thing, because at different times it has borne different meanings. Johnson's definition of it as a loose sally of the mind an irregular undigested piece covered its employment by authors to excuse shortcomings, and to disarm the critic in his examination of a work which boasted of no pretence to literature. Some such idea of admitted or implied failure in a worthy experiment adhered to Montaigne's use of the word in those Essaz's which were published in 1580. But the decay of this sense began in fact with this publication, although the author expressed his apology for being some thing fantastical For that very wandering from point to point which in Montaigne was a habit of mind, was developed by the English essayists of the eighteenth century into a deliberate study. Out of what Montaigne would have been only too pleased to call irregularity and want of finish they invented a literary quality which in Goldsmith rose to a perfection of carelessness in approaching and retreating from a subject. It was in another direction from that taken by Montaigne and his followers that Bacon enlarged the meaning of the word essay in literature. He applied it to his pieces not in the sense of an experiment but in the sense of a test or assay He weighed and examined his subjects one by one. With the grip of his intellect he clung to each separate subject as to a rock while he treated of it, refusing to dip to the invading wave of kindred ideas by which it was surrounded. In the dedica tion of his second edition of pieces to Prince Henry of Wales in 1612 he wrote of them as brief notes, set down rather significantly than curiously, which I have called Essays. The word is late, but the thing is ancient'. And he went on to point out that Seneca's epistles to Lucilius were, if read aright, nothing but essays. Book Description
Excerpt from The Essays, Vol. 1 of 3: Translated by Charles Cotton The text of these volumes is taken from the first edition of Cotton's version, printed in 3 vols. 8vc, 1685 - 6, and republished in 1693, 1700, 171 1, 1738, and 1743, in the same number of volumes and the same size. In the earliest impression the errors of the press are corrected merely as far as page 240 of the first volume, and all the editions follow one another. That of 168 5 - 6 was the only one which the translator lived to see. He died in 1687, leaving behind him an interesting and little-known collection of poems, which appeared posthumously, 8vo, 1689. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems and Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 I DO not think that any reader of the poems and essays which these volumes contain can fail to wish for some further insight into the character of their author. I am aware, indeed, that Mr. Roscoe's career was not in any way one to justify a formal biography, or even an extended memoir. For though his intrinsic claims to some permanent, if modest, place in English lite rature may probably be conceded by most competent judges of his literary remains, there was certainly no thing in his external life to render Mr. Carlyle's most pathetic question in any way inapplicable to his case.
