The Old English Farming Books: 1840-1860

The Old English Farming Books: 1840-1860 PDF Author: George Edwin Fussell
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
This fourth volume of Dr. Fussell's bibliography covers the period from the foundation of the Royal Agricultural Society of England to the agricultural repercussions of the abolition of the Corn Laws. The twenty years featured in this volume saw the publication of an enormous number of farming tracts and studies, reflecting the spread of the agricultural revolution across England and the final creation of the present-day system of agricultural production. As in the earlier volumes in this series, the author's thorough coverage of this literature brings together a wide collection of source material and thus makes an important contribution to historical studies. The growing demand for cheaper food, that eventually led to the abolition of the Corn Laws, the effects of the potato blight of 1844-45, and the famine in Ireland, the introduction of phosphates, and the increased importance of agricultural education -- these are the subjects reflected in the agricultural literature of the period, and Dr. Fussell's work helps document the consequent changes in the agricultural background in the vital years that led to England becoming a food-importing nation.

Financing the Landed Estate

Financing the Landed Estate PDF Author: Carol Beardmore
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030145522
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
While there is an extensive historiography which explores English agriculture in the nineteenth century, there has been less attention paid to individual estates and in particular the role of the land agent within their management, administration and participation in rural community relationships. Nowhere is this more obvious in the lack of research into the financial history of the landed estate, even though in the early nineteenth century these were some of the largest businesses in England. The Castleman letters are a rich source which detail the intricate working, financial, social and political relationships which constituted the foundation of the landed estate. The vouchers of which more than 10,000 have survived alongside the rental accounts have rarely been examined. On their own they illustrate, for example: the sums paid out on maintenance, the interest payments on mortgages, charitable expenditure, spending on property repairs and one-off payments for a wide and diverse range of items. Together with the diurnal correspondence all three aspects of the archive detail the daily financial undertakings and form the foundation of a new financial history of the estate. This book will show that estate management was underpinned by an inherent understanding of the financial decisions which needed to be taken, and will be of interest to academics and researchers of financial history.

The Enclosure of Knowledge

The Enclosure of Knowledge PDF Author: James D. Fisher
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316517985
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 345

Book Description
The rise of agrarian capitalism in Britain is usually told as a story about markets, land, and wages. This study reveals that it was also about books, knowledge and expertise, challenging the dominant narrative of an agricultural 'enlightenment' and showing how farming books appropriated traditional knowledge in pre-industrial Britain.

The Cambridge Economic History of Modern Britain: Volume 1, Industrialisation, 1700–1870

The Cambridge Economic History of Modern Britain: Volume 1, Industrialisation, 1700–1870 PDF Author: Roderick Floud
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316061159
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 515

Book Description
A new edition of the leading textbook on the economic history of Britain since industrialization. Combining the expertise of more than thirty leading historians and economists, Volume 1 tracks Britain's economic history in the period ranging from 1700 to 1870 from industrialisation to global trade and empire. Each chapter provides a clear guide to the major controversies in the field and students are shown how to connect historical evidence with economic theory and apply quantitative methods. New approaches are proposed to classic issues such as the causes and consequences of industrialisation, the role of institutions and the state, and the transition from an organic to an inorganic economy, as well as introducing new issues such as globalisation, convergence and divergence, the role of science, technology and invention, and the growth of consumerism. Throughout the volume, British experience is set within an international context and its performance benchmarked against its global competitors.
