Book Description
Consisting of silicates, iron and other compounds, slag cement is the by-product of molten iron production in a blast-furnace. Also known as ground granulated blast¬furnace slag, slag cement often used in concrete requiring maximum durability and higher strength. This study is to investigate the behavior of slag cement as a partial replacement material for Portland cement up to 30% and 40% of slag cement and its effectiveness in improving the properties of mortar. It was achieved by compression test and flexural test conducted to determine the highest strength development between samples for 7, 14 and 28 age days of curing time. There were three types of samples that has been tested according to BS 4551: Part 1: 1998, which are mortar containing 30% of slag cement, 40% of slag cement and mortar with plain ordinary Portland cement as the control samples. At the age of 28 days of curing, mortar containing 30% and 40% of slag gave compressive strength of 5.945 MPa, 11.51 MPa for air curing and 6.076 MPa, 12.34 MPa for water curing respectively and gave flexural strength of 2.2 MPa, 2.384 MPa for air curing and 2.249 MPa, 2.549 MPa for water curing respectively. Besides, this studies also to investigate the effect of curing condition to strength development and drying shrinkage of samples containing 30% and 40% of slag, where samples with water curing achieved higher strength development and low shrinkage rate than the samples with air curing. The used of concrete as samples besides mortar is recommended for future works and studies. -Author.

Book Description
This paper studies the effect of slag cement to the properties of mortar such compressive strength, flexural strength, workability and drying shrinkage. From the compression and flexural test, it was found that the increase in strength by time goes achieved at 70 percent replacement, even though it was still lower than control mortar. However the strength achieved for both sample was not differ too much where the strength was 13.41 MPa and 16.46 MPa in compression and 0.99 MPa and 1.21 MPa in flexural for curing in air and water respectively at 70 percent replacement while control mortar gave 20.82 MPa and 20.54 MPa compressive strength and 1.62 MPa and 1.56 MPa flexural strength for curing in water and air respectively. At aged 7 days, mortar containing 80 percent slag cement gave the highest flexural strength, 1.32 MPa but from whole results in both strength tests, the strength was reduced by the time goes. The strength achieved was only 0.69 MPa and 0.52 MPa in flexural and 5.82 MPa and 5.25 MPa in compression for water and air curing respectively. In drying shrinkage, it was found that mortar incorporating slag cement gave the greater results than control mortar but at 80 percent replacement in air curing condition, the shrinkage was obviously decrease and lower than control mortar at aged 13 days and beyond. Therefore from all of the strength achieved, it proved that the 70 percent replacement is more suitable to be used as cement partial replacement. -Author.

Engineering Properties of Slag Cement

Book Description
This study is to investigate the engineering properties of slag cement as partial replacement material at 50% and 60% of binder content. The slag cement is also known as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). The field of studies covers important parameters in determining the engineering properties such as compressive and flexural strength and drying shrinkage. A total of 54 cubes (70 x 70 x 70 mm) and 54 prisms (l00 x 100 x 500 mm) were prepared in three groups according to different binder content and the samples were cured under two curing conditions which were air and water curing for 7, 14 and 28 days before testing. Three types of mixtures were prepared based on the level of replacement of 50%, 60% and 0% as the control mixture. The water to cement ratio of 0.5 and cement: aggregates ratio of 1:3 were applied to all mixtures with the aggregates size are within the range of 1.18 mm to 2.36 mm. The result showed that the GGBS mixtures achieved higher compressive and flexural strength than OPC mixture for water curing condition but lower strength for air curing condition. The 60% GGBS mixture shows highest drying shrinkage strain compared to other mixture in both curing condition. Through the observation, the GGBS showed lower early strength gain but a satisfying improvement of strength as the time increased. The study demonstrated that better engineering properties of slag cement can be achieved with proper curing condition. -Author.

Handbook of Alkali-Activated Cements, Mortars and Concretes

Handbook of Alkali-Activated Cements, Mortars and Concretes PDF Author: F. Pacheco-Torgal
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1782422889
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 855

Book Description
This book provides an updated state-of-the-art review on new developments in alkali-activation. The main binder of concrete, Portland cement, represents almost 80% of the total CO2 emissions of concrete which are about 6 to 7% of the Planet’s total CO2 emissions. This is particularly serious in the current context of climate change and it could get even worse because the demand for Portland cement is expected to increase by almost 200% by 2050 from 2010 levels, reaching 6000 million tons/year. Alkali-activated binders represent an alternative to Portland cement having higher durability and a lower CO2 footprint. Reviews the chemistry, mix design, manufacture and properties of alkali-activated cement-based concrete binders Considers performance in adverse environmental conditions. Offers equal emphasis on the science behind the technology and its use in civil engineering.
