Geomorphology for Engineers

Geomorphology for Engineers PDF Author: P. G. Fookes
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 888

Book Description
Geomorphological landforms and processes exert a strong influence on surface engineering works, yet comparatively little information on geomorphology is available to engineers. Thoroughly revised and with an improved format, this book presents a broad view of geomorphology, examining near-surface engineering problems associated with various landscapes. Self-contained chapters contributed by leading authorities first address the major factors that control the materials, form, and processes on the Earth's surface. The second section deals with the geomorphological processes that help shape land surfaces and influence their engineering characteristics, and the final section explore environments and landscapes.

Engineering Geology and Geomorphology of Glaciated and Periglaciated Terrains

Engineering Geology and Geomorphology of Glaciated and Periglaciated Terrains PDF Author: J.S. Griffiths
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 1786203022
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 975

Book Description
The Engineering Group of the Geological Society Working Party brought together experts in glacial and periglacial geomorphology, Quaternary history, engineering geology and geotechnical engineering to establish best practice when working in former glaciated and periglaciated environments. The Working Party addressed outdated terminology and reviewed the latest academic research to provide an up-to-date understanding of glaciated and periglaciated terrains. This transformative, state-of-the-art volume is the outcome of five years of deliberation and synthesis by the Working Party. This is an essential reference text for practitioners, students and academics working in these challenging ground conditions. The narrative style, and a comprehensive glossary and photo-catalogue of active and relict sediments, structures and landforms make this material relevant and accessible to a wide readership.

The History of the Study of Landforms or the Development of Geomorphology, Volume 5

The History of the Study of Landforms or the Development of Geomorphology, Volume 5 PDF Author: T.P. Burt
Publisher: Geological Society of London Memoirs
ISBN: 1786205645
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 435

Book Description
Co-published with British Society for Geomorphology This volume is the fifth in the definitive series, The History of the Study of Landforms or the Development of Geomorphology. Volume 1 (1964) dealt with contributions to the field up to 1890, Volume 2 (1973) with the concepts and contributions of William Morris Davis and Volume 3 (1991) covered historical and regional themes during the ‘classic’ period of geomorphology (1890–1950). Volume 4 (2008) concentrated on studies of geomorphological processes and Quaternary geomorphology between 1890 and 1965; by the end of this period, process-based studies had become dominant. Volume 5 builds on this platform, covering in detail the revolutionary changes in approach that characterized the study of geomorphology in the second half of the twentieth century. It is divided into three sections: the first deals with changes in approach and method; the second with changes in ideas and the broader scientific context within which geomorphology is studied; and the final section details advances in research on processes and landforms. The volume’s objective is to describe and analyse many of the developments that provide a foundation for the rich and varied subject matter of twenty-first century geomorphology.

The Earth's Land Surface

The Earth's Land Surface PDF Author: Kenneth J Gregory
Publisher: SAGE Publications
ISBN: 1848606206
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
This introductory text details the land surface of the earth in a readable style covering the major issues, key themes and sensitivities of the environments/landscape. Emphasizing the major ideas and their development, each chapter includes case studies and details of influential scientists (not necessarily geomorphologists) who have contributed to the progress of understanding. Providing a very clear explanation of the understanding achieved and of the debates that have arisen, the book is comprised of 12 chapters in four sections: Visualizing the land surface explains and explores the composition of the land surface and outlines how it has been studied Dynamics of the land surface considers the dynamics affecting the earth’s land surface including its influences, processes and the changes that have occurred Environments of the land surface looks to understand the land surface in major world regions highlighting differences between the areas Management of the land surface is an examination of the current and future prospects of the management of the earth’s land surface

Geological Hazards in the UK

Geological Hazards in the UK PDF Author: D.P. Giles
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 1786204614
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 499

Book Description
The UK is perhaps unique globally in that it presents the full spectrum of geological time, stratigraphy and associated lithologies within its boundaries. With this wide range of geological assemblages comes a wide range of geological hazards, whether they be geophysical (earthquakes, effects of volcanic eruptions, tsunami, landslides), geotechnical (collapsible, compressible, liquefiable, shearing, swelling and shrinking soils), geochemical (dissolution, radon and methane gas hazards) or georesource related (coal, chalk and other mineral extraction). An awareness of these hazards and the risks that they pose is a key requirement of the engineering geologist. The Geological Society considered that a Working Party Report would help to put the study and assessment of geohazards into the wider social context, helping the engineering geologist to better communicate the issues concerning geohazards in the UK to the client and the public. This volume sets out to define and explain these geohazards, to detail their detection, monitoring and management and to provide a basis for further research and understanding.
