Engaging Youth in Philanthropy PDF Author: Bill Stanczykiewicz

Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
Explores ways nonprofits can foster lifelong philanthropic habit in today's youth. Editor Bill Stanczykiewicz, president and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute, and contributors examine successful youth engagement programs that illustrate that philanthropy is a habit that can be demonstrated, taught, and inculcated at a very young age. Progams discussed include a YMCA program encouraging civic activity among children with backgrounds in lower-income communities and lower academic achievement which demonstrates that the instruction of philanthropic values and behaviors can transcend traditional qualifiers of income and education. Contributors also present results of a four-year study on college undergraduates who earn college scholarships that require recipients to participate in community service, and show how they reveal increased philanthropic values these students, in addition to other personal skills that benefit civic engagement and service to others. Other aspects of youth philanthropy examined include the significant legal issues surrounding adolescents raising money for organizations, youth serving on nonprofit boards, and youth casting deciding votes on board matters. The issue also includes an informative primer on youth and philanthropy that demonstrates how young people learn philanthropic behavior from several sectors within civil society, including community foundations, nonprofit organizations, schools, and government. With insight from professionals in the field, as well as the passionate voices of philanthropic youth themselves, this issue illustrates how we must be actively engaged in the lives of children and youth -- in our families and in our communities - not just to develop healthy habits of philanthropy, but for their overall healthy development.

Best Practices in Youth Philanthropy

Best Practices in Youth Philanthropy PDF Author: Marci E. Gaines
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Charity
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
Interest in youth volunteering from researchers, policymakers, and practitioners has never been higher. Young people require a deeper understanding of philanthropy and pathways to action. Furthermore, systematic and intentional efforts have been made to expose students to service learning, philanthropy education, and broader participation programs. Additionally, requirements have been instituted at some high schools, colleges, and universities in the form of full courses or extracurricular activities that include philanthropy education. This hybrid capstone utilizes a traditional literature review and an independent case study of youth philanthropy initiatives at Pennsylvania State University, both of which explore the importance of K-12 youth philanthropy, their impact on children and youth, and ways schools and organizations can engage youth in philanthropy programs.

Leading Up

Leading Up PDF Author: Lilya Wagner
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0471697184
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
Fundraisers at all levels discover the art of leading up Fundraisers know that in order to be successful in their demanding profession, they have to get things done. And to get things done, they need to exercise leadership from whatever rank or position they hold--often from the middle. This concept is called "leading up." Recognizing that all fundraisers must be leaders, Leading Up teaches professionals the skills and traits they need to be successful in their philanthropic roles. Leading Up centers around author Lilya Wagner's unique model, which exemplifies the concept of leading up. Here, fundraisers will discover: how to get things done when they're not in charge; how to motivate others when they don't have formal authority; how to convince or persuade their colleagues and superiors about their need for action and involvement; and how to lead when they're not recognized leaders by virtue of power or position. Focusing on problem-solving concepts, Leading Up is packed with thought provoking questions, exercises, and practical application steps that allow professionals to practice and implement the principles they've just learned. The book also includes inspirational quotes on leadership from recognized and successful professionals and leaders. Leadership qualities have to be learned and practiced by all who wish to achieve success in fundraising, whether boss or not. Leading Up provides readers with the groundwork they need to not only build up their causes and organizations, but also influence a professional field that is still developing.
