Book Description
This work package focuses on developing Best Practices for the design of security for, and domestic safeguarding (e.g. MC & A) of, a pilot-scale independent spent/used fuel storage facility consistent with conceptual design efforts in Nuclear Fuels Storage and Transportation (NFST) and Used Fuel Disposal (UFD) campaigns. This is a review of the basic design of the facility to determine a candidate list of accounting and control requirements that could be considered for safeguards and security purposes.

Safeguards and Security by Design (SSBD) for the Domestic Threat - Theft and Sabotage

Safeguards and Security by Design (SSBD) for the Domestic Threat - Theft and Sabotage PDF Author:

Book Description
Safeguards by Design (SBD) is receiving significant interest with respect to international safeguards objectives. However, less attention has been focused on the equally important topic of domestic Safeguards and Security by Design (SSBD), which addresses requirements such as those of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in the United States. While international safeguards are concerned with detecting State diversion of nuclear material from peaceful to nuclear explosives purposes, domestic Material Protection, Control and Accounting measures (MPC & A) are focused on non-State theft and sabotage. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has described the Safeguards by Design (SBD) concept as an approach in which 'international safeguards are fully integrated into the design process of a new nuclear facility from the initial planning through design, construction, operation, and decommissioning.' This same concept is equally applicable to SSBD for domestic requirements. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has initiated a project through its Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) and more specifically its Fuel Cycle Research and Development (FCRD) program, to develop a domestic SSBD discipline and methodology in parallel with similar efforts sponsored by the DOE Next Generation Safeguards Initiative (NGSI) and the IAEA for international safeguards. This activity includes the participation of industry (through DOE-sponsored contracts) and DOE National Laboratories. This paper will identify the key domestic safeguards and security requirements (i.e. MC & A and physical protection) and explain how and why Safeguards and Security by Design (SSBD) is important and beneficial for the design of future US nuclear energy systems.

User Guides for Noise Modeling of Commercial Space Operations - RUMBLE and PCBoom

User Guides for Noise Modeling of Commercial Space Operations - RUMBLE and PCBoom PDF Author: Kevin A. Bradley
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780309446846
Category : Aerodynamic noise
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
Abstract: "Commercial space launch vehicle activities are expected to continue to increase. As they begin testing and become operational, many noise issues as well as the effects from sonic booms will need to be evaluated. The Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) is designed to evaluate the effects of noise and emissions from aircraft, but doesn't have the ability to predict noise and sonic boom effects from commercial space operations. Two tools were developed in this project to predict noise and sonic boom to be used in the noise modeling evaluation process. RUMBLE 2.0 predicts rocket noise, and PCBoom4 was modified to predict sonic boom from commercial space operations. ACRP Research Report 183 is the user's guide for each tool, and ACRP Web-Only Document 33: Commercial Space Operations Noise and Sonic Boom Modeling and Analysis is the contractor's final report on the methodology and development of these tools."

The Future of the Chemical Industry

The Future of the Chemical Industry PDF Author: Roger Jones
Publisher: OUP USA
ISBN: 9780841200029
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
This book features a new study that depicts the stagnation of employment opportunities for new chemistry graduates over the past twenty years and contrasts this with the opportunities for new chemical engineering graduates. While this information has been available for a long time, no one has previously analyzed and commented upon it. Also depicted is the growing movement of chemicals manufacturing and R&D offshore over the past five years as a result of adverse US government policies, accelerated by the current recession and pending energy taxes

International Safeguards in the Design of Nuclear Reactors

International Safeguards in the Design of Nuclear Reactors PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789201065148
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This publication is the second in the IAEA Nuclear Energy Series to provide guidance on the inclusion of safeguards in nuclear facility design and construction. It is principally intended for designers and operators of nuclear reactor facilities; however, vendors, national authorities and financial backers can also benefit from the information provided. It is introductory rather than comprehensive in nature, complementing the Guidance for States Implementing Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements and Additional Protocols, IAEA Services Series No. 21, and other publications in that series. The publication complements the general considerations addressed in International Safeguards in Nuclear Facility Design and Construction, IAEA Nuclear Energy Series No. NP-T-2.8.
