The Bernard van Leer Foundation initiated a program in France entitled Relais Enfants-Parents to bring the children of prisoners to the forefront of social, political and judicial policy. The Relais Enfants-Parents program works to safeguard the psychological and emotional development of children by serving as a link between them and their imprisoned parents. The program tries to preserve, and often to recreate, the bond between the children and their parents which separation often weakens. This book shows how Relais Enfants-Parents came into existence with initial resistance from the penal system and doubt from imprisoned parents. The book presents the rationale behind the creation of the program and describes a pilot program that evolved since 1972. Strategies are presented that are used to strengthen parent-child relationships, fortify parent roles, and help children overcome the stressful experience of a first visit to an imprisoned parent.
