Book Description
The objective of this thesis is to provide some of the basic building blocks that are necessary for wireless sensor networks, and that address their special characteristics. These basic building blocks are in the areas of medium access and routing. Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols define rules to access and control the shared medium and play a critical role in the efficient and fair sharing of wireless bandwidth. Provided that the radio transceiver unit is the most power consuming unit of a physical sensor node, large energy savings can be achieved at the link layer where the MAC protocol is controlling the usage of the radio. In this context, we have proposed three MAC protocols that address the problems of energy consumption, quality of service (QoS), and mobility in sensor networks. Routing protocols specifies how sensor nodes communicate with each other by disseminating information that enables these nodes to build routes between them and sink node(s). These protocols enable different types of traffic to be delivered and fused during delivery to limit the amount of control information exchange. We tackled the problem of routing in WSNs, and proposed two routing protocols. Our proposed protocols maximize network lifetime through balancing energy utilization among nodes in the network (using multiple paths rather than single path), provide QoS through the use of the service differentiation concept to allow high important traffic to reach the destination within time bounds, implement Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques to increase resiliency to path failures and hence increases the probability that an enough portion of the data packet is received at the destination to recover the original data message without incurring excessive delay through data retransmissions. Our contribution in this thesis is not only to design energy efficient MAC and routing protocols , but we consider other issues like increasing throughput, minimizing transmission delay, improving scalability, and handling nodes mobility.

Book Description
Wireless sensor network is a network of spatially distributed nodes to monitor certain application specific data. It consists of large number of sensor nodes with one or more base stations. The data is communicated from sensor nodes to the base station either directly or in multihop fashion. Routing is a key challenge in sensor networks, because nodes in the networks are constrained by energy, processing power, and memory. Such motivation drives motivation to design energy efficient routing protocols for sensor networks to prolong network lifetime. In this study i proposed a new multihop routing algorithm named energy efficient protocol using ring zone model (EEPRM). The protocol is simple and does routing decisions based on remaining energy of nodes, and does location based routing without the need for the nodes to know their positions.Simulation-based evaluation of EEPRM in OMNET++ conducted and the protocol is compared against well known protocols including An Address Light Integrated MAC and Routing Protocol for WSN, Flooding and AODV.Simulation results show that EEPRM outperforms AIMRP, AODV, and Flooding in terms of end to end delay, average hop count, and energy efficiency

Book Description
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things are facing tremendous advances both in terms of energy-efficiency as well as in the number of available applications. Consequently, there are challenges that need to be tackled for the future generation of WSNs. After giving an overview of the WSN protocols and IEEE 802.15.4 standard, this book proposes IEEE 802.15.4 Medium Access Control (MAC) sub-layer performance enhancements by employing not only RTS/CTS combined with packet concatenation but also scheduled channel poling (MC-SCP). Results have shown that the use of the RTS/CTS mechanism improves channel efficiency by decreasing the deferral time before transmitting a data packet. Furthermore, the Sensor Block Acknowledgment MAC (SBACK-MAC) protocol enables more efficiency as it allows the aggregation of several acknowledgement responses in one special Block Acknowledgment (BACK) Response packet. The throughput and delay performance have been mathematically derived under both ideal conditions (a channel environment with no transmission errors) and non-ideal conditions (with transmission errors). Simulation results successfully validate the proposed analytical models. This research reveals the importance of an appropriate design for the MAC sub-layer protocol for the desired WSN application. Depending on the mission of the WSN application, different protocols are required. Therefore, the overall performance of a WSN application certainly depends on the development and application of suitable e.g., MAC, network layer protocols.
