Book Description
The need for energy efficient communications is essential in current and next-generation wireless communications systems. A large component of energy expenditure in mobile devices is in the mobile radio interface. Proper scheduling and resource allocation techniques that exploit instantaneous and long-term average knowledge of the channel, queue state and quality of service parameters can be used to improve the energy efficiency of communication. This thesis focuses on exploiting queue and channel state information as well as quality of service parameters in order to design energy efficient scheduling techniques. The proposed designs are for multi-stream, multi-channel systems and in general have high computational complexity. The large contributions of this thesis are in both the design of optimal/near-optimal scheduling/resource allocation schemes for these systems as well as proposing complexity reduction methods in their design. Methods are proposed for both a MIMO downlink system as well as an LTE uplink system. The effect of power efficiency on quality of service parameters is well studied as well as complexity/efficiency comparisons between optimal/near optimal allocations.

Scheduling for Energy Conservation and Quality Enhancement in Multi-hop Wireless Networks

Scheduling for Energy Conservation and Quality Enhancement in Multi-hop Wireless Networks PDF Author: Ashima Gupta

Book Description
Wireless networks and devices are ubiquitous today. This is primarily due to the increased mobility, flexibility and connectivity as well as high speed and low cost deployment that they provide. However quality of service, capacity, spectral efficiency and battery lifetime are some major concerns of wireless devices and networks. The broadcast nature of wireless media makes them prone to losses and high bit error rates. These variabilities make it challenging to guarantee quality of service parameters like rate, latency and jitter. Wireless devices consume more power than corresponding wired devices. These devices function on limited battery capacity to facilitate portability and mobility. Hence, their operational lifecycle is governed by the efficiency of their battery usage. The objective of this thesis is to analyze and apply novel application aware cross-layer scheduling techniques for energy conservation and quality enhancement in multi-hop wireless networks. We focus on scheduling techniques as many of these can integrated with existing systems and incorporated in new designs. Application awareness helps to identify the constraints and requirements at lower network layers (network and MAC layer). This facilitates the lower layers to perform prioritized scheduling to optimize bandwidth utilization for class differentiated flows and devise adaptive sleep-awake scheduling while minimizing the impact on quality of service. Specifically, we identify three applications: OFDMA based multi-hop networks, Sensor networks and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). We model QoS aware centralized slot allocation scheme for prioritized flows in OFDMA based networks as an ILP that maximizes the described Flow Admittance metric. Several computationally tractable heuristics are compared for efficiency using different topologies and workloads. We enhance this solution for IEEE 802.16j networks making it scalable and adaptive to rate changes and link demands. We illustrate how a multi-channel sensor network scheduling scheme results in considerable energy savings when used to model a moving phenomenon or to deploy a heterogeneous sensor network. This is achieved without significant degradation in data gathering: quality or latency. Finally, we show how an adaptive scanning technique utilizing the sleep-awake scheduling in Wi-Fi networks is used to conserve energy and increase battery lifetime in VoIP Wi-Fi devices.

Energy-Efficient Scheduling under Delay Constraints for Wireless Networks

Energy-Efficient Scheduling under Delay Constraints for Wireless Networks PDF Author: Randal Berry
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031792548

Pages : 84

Book Description
Packet delay and energy consumption are important considerations in wireless and sensor networks as these metrics directly affect the quality of service of the application and the resource consumption of the network; especially, for a rapidly growing class of real-time applications that impose strict restrictions on packet delays. Dynamic rate control is a novel technique for adapting the transmission rate of wireless devices, almost in real-time, to opportunistically exploit time-varying channel conditions as well as changing traffic patterns. Since power consumption is not a linear function of the rate and varies significantly with the channel conditions, adapting the rate has significant benefits in minimizing energy consumption. These benefits have prompted significant research in developing algorithms for achieving optimal rate adaptation while satisfying quality of service requirements. In this book, we provide a comprehensive study of dynamic rate control for energy minimization under packet delay constraints. We present several formulations and approaches adopted in the literature ranging from discrete-time formulations and dynamic programming based solutions to continuous-time approaches utilizing ideas from network calculus and stochastic optimal control theory. The goal of this book is to expose the reader to the important problem of wireless data transmission with delay constraints and to the rich set of tools developed in recent years to address it. Energy Efficient Spectrum Resources Usage in WPANs

Energy Efficient Spectrum Resources Usage in WPANs PDF Author: Luís Miguel Borges

Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things are facing tremendous advances both in terms of energy-efficiency as well as in the number of available applications. Consequently, there are challenges that need to be tackled for the future generation of WSNs. After giving an overview of the WSN protocols and IEEE 802.15.4 standard, this book proposes IEEE 802.15.4 Medium Access Control (MAC) sub-layer performance enhancements by employing not only RTS/CTS combined with packet concatenation but also scheduled channel poling (MC-SCP). Results have shown that the use of the RTS/CTS mechanism improves channel efficiency by decreasing the deferral time before transmitting a data packet. Furthermore, the Sensor Block Acknowledgment MAC (SBACK-MAC) protocol enables more efficiency as it allows the aggregation of several acknowledgement responses in one special Block Acknowledgment (BACK) Response packet. The throughput and delay performance have been mathematically derived under both ideal conditions (a channel environment with no transmission errors) and non-ideal conditions (with transmission errors). Simulation results successfully validate the proposed analytical models. This research reveals the importance of an appropriate design for the MAC sub-layer protocol for the desired WSN application. Depending on the mission of the WSN application, different protocols are required. Therefore, the overall performance of a WSN application certainly depends on the development and application of suitable e.g., MAC, network layer protocols.

Energy Efficient Scheduling Techniques for Real-time Embedded Systems

Book Description
Battery-powered portable embedded systems have been widely used in many applications. These embedded systems have to concurrently perform a multitude of complex tasks under stringent time constraints. As these systems become more complex and incorporate more functionality, they became more power-hungry. Thus, reducing power consumption and extending battery lifespan while guaranteeing the timing constraints has became a critical aspect in designing such systems. This gives rise to three aspects of research: (i) Guaranteeing the execution of the hard real-time tasks by their deadlines, (ii) Determining the minimum voltage under which each task can be executed, and (iii) Techniques to take advantage of run-time variations in the execution times of tasks. In this research, we present techniques that address the above aspects in single and multi processor embedded systems. We study the performance of the proposed techniques on various benchmarks in terms of energy savings.
