Pages : 209

Book Description
With South Asia's growing energy demand, governments in the region are facing the short-term pressures of facilitating energy access, while attempting to formulate long-term sustainable strategies. This book explores how the key economies of South Asia are addressing issues such as the diversification of energy consumption profiles and import sources, investments in renewables, enabling universal energy access, challenges to regional energy cooperation, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and the policy changes that can foster bilateral and multilateral action. As governments seek to ensure access to affordable, reliable, secure, sustainable and modern energy, trends and drivers are emerging and shaping the South Asian energy landscape. The first section of the book examines energy trends at the regional level, while the second section focuses on the internal and external challenges faced by India — the largest energy consumer in the region and the third-largest energy consumer in the world. The diverse perspectives in this volume provide a holistic snapshot of South Asia's ongoing low-carbon energy transition, and highlight the importance of the region working collectively to navigate the many obstacles.

Southeast Asia and the Economics of Global Climate Stabilization

Southeast Asia and the Economics of Global Climate Stabilization PDF Author: David A. Raitzer
Publisher: Asian Development Bank
ISBN: 9292573055
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
Climate change is a global concern of special relevance to Southeast Asia, a region that is both vulnerable to the effects of climate change and a rapidly increasing emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs). This study focuses on five countries of Southeast Asia that collectively account for 90% of regional GHG emissions in recent years---Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. It applies two global dynamic economy–energy–environment models under an array of scenarios that reflect potential regimes for regulating global GHG emissions through 2050. The modeling identifies the potential economic costs of climate inaction for the region, how the countries can most efficiently achieve GHG emission mitigation, and the consequences of mitigation, both in terms of benefits and costs. Drawing on the modeling results, the study analyzes climate-related policies and identifies how further action can be taken to ensure low-carbon growth.

Energy-irrigation nexus in South Asia: Improving groundwater conservation and power sector viability

Energy-irrigation nexus in South Asia: Improving groundwater conservation and power sector viability PDF Author: Shah, T., Scott, C., Kishore, A., Sharma, A.
Publisher: IWMI
ISBN: 9290905883
Category : Energy consumption
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
In the highly populated South Asian region, where pump irrigation has gained predominance over gravity-flow irrigation in recent decades, the fortunes of groundwater and energy economies are closely tied. Little can be done in the groundwater economy that will not affect the energy economy, and the struggle to make the energy economy viable is frustrated by the often violent opposition from the farming community to the rationalization of energy prices. As a result, the region's groundwater economy has boomed at the expense of the development of the energy economy. This report suggests that this does not have to be so; and the first step to evolving approaches to sustaining a prosperous groundwater economy with a viable power sector is for the decision makers in the two sectors to talk to each other, and jointly explore better options for energy-groundwater co-management which, the authors suggest, have so far been overlooked.

Harmonizing Electricity Laws in South Asia

Harmonizing Electricity Laws in South Asia PDF Author: Asian Development Bank
Publisher: Asian Development Bank
ISBN: 9292579681
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 139

Book Description
Electricity shortages in South Asia are adversely impacting the region's socioeconomic development. Energy trade is seen as a solution to this challenge. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Framework Agreement for Energy Cooperation (Electricity) is a key step in realizing regional trade in energy. To support implementation of the framework agreement, ADB and SAARC in Law are working to improve legal and regulatory harmonization in the energy sector. This report identifies the legal, regulatory, technical, and commercial requirements for energy trade, and what each country in South Asia needs to do to make the framework agreement a reality. The recommendations, summarized in tables, provide an easy reference for policy makers and energy stakeholders in the region.
