Abstract: The Earth's magnetic cusps are the regions with the most direct transfer of energy, mass, and momentum from the flowing solar wind to the Earth's magnetosphere. Spacecraft observations in the cusp have revealed a high energy component to the thermal particle distribution. This has raised the question as to whether significant plasma heating may also be occurring in this region. Since the cusp is magnetically connected to a number of other regions in geospace, plasma heating in this region could be a significant contributor to magnetospheric dynamics. The goal of this thesis is to answer the question, what is the source of the energetic particle population in the cusp? Since the initial observations measuring the energetic component were made, the source of the energetic population has been open to conjecture. A number of sources have been proposed: (1) the terrestrial bow shock, (2) the Earth's high-latitude trapping region, and (3) heating of plasma locally in the cusp. Depending on which source is the dominant provider of the energetic particles, the particle population will exhibit different properties. Particle flow direction, intensity, spectral characteristics, and species/charge state are all properties that can change depending on the dominant source. In-situ measurements by the ISEE, Polar, and Cluster spacecraft are used to derive the particle properties. These properties are compared with predictions for each of the proposed sources to determine which is most consistent with the observations. Case studies show that, under different conditions, the high-latitude trapping region and local heating can both be the dominant source of the energetic particle population up to energies of hundreds of keV. Results from a large scale statistical study, however, are more consistent with local heating indicating that this is the dominant source the majority of the time.

These proceedings are based upon introductory talks, research reports and discussions from the NATO Advanced Workshop on the "Morphology and Dynamics of the Polar Cusp", held at Lillehammer, Norway, 7-12 May, 1984. The upper atmosphere at high latitudes is called the "Earth's win dow to outer space". Through various electrodynamic coupling process es as well as through direct transfer of particles many geophysical effects displayed there are direct manifestations of phenomena occurring in the deep space. The high latitude ionosphere will also exert a feedback on the regions of the magnetosphere and atmosphere to which it is coupled, acting as a momentum and energy source and sink, and a source of particles. Of particular interest are the sections of the near space known as the Polar Cusp. A vast portion of the earth's magnetic field envelope is electrically connected to these regions. This geometry results in a spatial mapping of the magnetospheric pro cesses and a focusing on to the ionosphere. In the Polar Cusps the solar wind plasma has also direct access to the upper atmosphere. The polar regions are thus of extreme importance when it comes to under standing the physical processes in the near space and their effect on our environment. The Introductory Talks given at this workshop provided a common background for discussing and understanding the physics of the Polar Cusp. By this book we will make the information which thus was provid ed to the participants of the workshop accessible to a wider audience.

The cusps have traditionally been described as narrow funnel-shaped regions that provide a focus of the Chapman-Ferraro currents that flow on the magnetopause, a boundary between the cavity dominated by the geomagnetic field (i.e., the magnetosphere) and the external region of the interplanetary medium. Measurements from a number of recent satellite programs have shown that the cusp is not confined to a narrow region near local noon but appears to encompass a large portion of the dayside high-latitude magnetosphere and it appears that the cusp is a major source region for the production of energetic charged particles for the magnetosphere. The past forty years of space research have seen a substantial improvement in our understanding of the Earth’s magnetosphere and its coupling with the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic ?eld (IMF). The magnetospheric str- ture has been mapped and major processes determining this structure have been de?ned. However, the picture obtained is too often static. We know how the magnetosphere forms via the interaction of the solar wind and IMF with the Earth’s magnetic ?eld. We can describe the steady state for various upstream conditions but do not really understand the dynamic processes leading from one state to another. The main dif?culty is that the magnetosphere is a comp- cated system with many time constants ranging from fractions of a second to days and the system rarely attains a steady state. Two decades ago, it became clear that further progress would require multi-point measurements. Since then, two multi-spacecraft missions have been launched — INTERBALL in 1995/96 and CLUSTER II in 2000. The objectives of these missions d- fered but were complementary: While CLUSTER is adapted to meso-scale processes, INTERBALL observed larger spatial and temporal scales. However, the number of papers taking advantage of both missions simul- neously is rather small.
