Endoscopy in the Diagnosis of Small Intestine Diseases

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to improve diagnostic yields of capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy, because those procedures can depict nonspecific findings that may not lead to a proper diagnosis. Another reason for the publication was recognition of the difficulty in distinguishing enteroscopic findings of ulcerative colitis from those of Crohn’s disease. From a practical point of view, it is important to observe endoscopic pictures first, then to compare the images of other modalities, and finally to compare macroscopic pictures of resected specimens. For that reason, a large number of well-depicted examples of small intestinal lesions were assembled to clarify differences among small intestinal lesions that appear to exhibit similar findings and morphologies. Comparisons with radiographic findings comprise another important element in diagnosis. There are limitations in endoscopic observations of gross lesions of the small intestine, with its many convolutions. In Japan, many institutions still practice double-contrast imaging, which provides beautiful results. Because a single disorder may exhibit variations, this volume includes multiple depictions of the same disorders. Also included are lesions in active and inactive phases, as both appearances are highly likely to be encountered simultaneously in clinical practice. The number of illustrated findings therefore has been limited to strictly selected cases.

Small Intestine Disease

Small Intestine Disease PDF Author: Hoon Jai Chun
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811672393
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
This book covers all aspects of small intestinal disease with the aim of providing an up-to-date reference of the highest quality that will assist in everyday clinical practice. After introductory chapters on anatomy, pathophysiology, epidemiology, and signs and symptoms, the roles of different imaging modalities in the diagnosis of small intestinal disease are clearly explained, focusing particularly on capsule endoscopy, device-assisted enteroscopy, CT and MR enterography, and nuclear medicine techniques. A series of chapters then address each of the diseases and conditions that may be encountered. The coverage is wide ranging, including, for example, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, Crohn’s disease and other inflammatory conditions, celiac disease, Behçet’s disease, Meckel’s diverticulum, intestinal tuberculosis, and various malignancies. Numerous informative clinical cases are presented to identify characteristic imaging findings and assist in treatment decision making. Small intestinal disease continues to represent a significant challenge. The scope and detail of this book will make it an invaluable asset for gastroenterologists and other clinicians.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Small Bowel Disorders

Book Description
Over the last few decades, remarkable progress has been made in understanding the aetiology and pathophysiology of diseases and many new theories emphasize the importance of the small bowel ‘ecosystem’ in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic illness. Emerging factors such as microbiome, stem cells, innate intestinal immunity and the enteric nervous system along with mucosal and endothelial barriers have key role in the development of gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal diseases. Therefore, the small intestine is considered key player in metabolic disease development, including diabetes mellitus, and other diet-related disorders such as celiac and non-celiac enteropathies. Another major field is drug metabolism and its interaction with microbiota. Moreover, the emergence of gut-brain, gut-liver and gut-blood barriers points toward the important role of small intestine in the pathogenesis of common disorders, such as liver disease, hypertension and neurodegenerative disease. However, the small bowel remains an organ that is difficult to fully access and assess and accurate diagnosis often poses a clinical challenge. Eventually, the therapeutic potential remains untapped. Therefore, it is due time to direct our interest towards the small intestine and unravel the interplay between small-bowel and other gastrointestinal (GI) and non-GI related maladies.

Book Description
Endoscopic access to the small bowel has advanced significantly since the introduction of video capsule endoscopy and deep enteroscopy in early 2000. Other major advances have occurred in imaging modalities involving computed tomography and magnetic resonance studies. Due to these advances, the recent 2015 ACG guideline changed the terminology from “obscure to “small bowel bleeding because the majority of cases now can be found to have a small bowel source. The improvements in technology have advanced our ability to visualized vascular findings, inflammatory lesions, and small bowel neoplasms. Articles in this issue are devoted to these improvements in technology.

Thus, traditional diagnostic methods such as imaging techniques are flanked by enteroscopy. The aim of this book is to present the results of enteroscopy as a method to diagnose small bowel disease, correlating it to the other investigative methods and above all to clinical findings. The book is a unique selected collection of images deriving from the results of documented experience and also including a brief clinical presentation, tables and diagrams of diagnostic algorithms. Renowned and accredited experts in gastroenterology, enteroscopy and researchers in the sector of small bowel disease have contributed to this volume.

Book Description
Advances in Endoscopy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease summarizes the recent progress made in endoscopy, an essential tool for the diagnosis and management of IBD. It goes on to provide an introduction of state-of-the-art endoscopic techniques, as well as an atlas of high-quality endoscopic images of IBD and related diseases. Among others, endoscopy is one of the clinical fields in which Asian countries are leading the way in the management of gastrointestinal disorders. As the number of patients with IBD is dramatically increasing in Asia, quality of patient care has been significantly improved. With diagnosis of intestinal Behcet, simple ulcers, and intestinal tuberculosis, which are unique to the Asian countries, this book offers the ideal standard textbook for IBD endoscopy in all Asian counties, while the superior quality of images also makes it a valuable resource for practitioners around the globe. This book will significantly help all physicians, endoscopists and researchers working on GI endoscopy, especially those focusing on IBD, to improve their knowledge of IBD endoscopy.

Endoscopy in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Endoscopy in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease PDF Author: Luigi Dall'Oglio
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319612492
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 106

Book Description
This book describes an up-to-date practical strategy for the use of endoscopy in the evaluation and management of pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). All aspects of the role of endoscopy in Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) – the two most common types of IBD – are addressed. Readers will find detailed information on its use in the initial diagnosis of IBD, differentiation between CD and UC, assessment of disease extent and activity, monitoring of response to therapy, and surveillance for cancer and dysplasia. Attention is drawn to specific clinical and endoscopic features of CD and UC in the pediatric age group that serve to illustrate why the child is not to be regarded merely as a small adult. Helpful information is also supplied on equipment, patient and parent preparation, and sedation. Endoscopy is considered the best means of obtaining a definite diagnosis in children who may have IBD, and this book will be of value to practitioners at all levels of experience.
