Book Description
Memoirs of a Jew born in Riga in 1927. Pp. 19-90 recount his experiences in the Holocaust, including the massacres which took place, with Latvian collaboration, immediately after the German occupation in July 1941. Discusses the large ghetto and the small ghetto, where Ratz was taken with other able-bodied males. The large ghetto was liquidated, with thousands of Riga's Jews, including Ratz's mother and three of his brothers, who were shot in the Rumbuli Forest. Ratz survived the war in the company of his father, spending 17 months in the Lenta labor camp, where the commander, Fritz Scherwitz (or Eleke Sirewitz), was actually a Jew who hid his identity and helped the prisoners. Ratz spent a week in the Salaspils concentration camp and survived two death marches. He was taken by ship to Stutthof and then to the camps of Burggraben and Gotendorf, where he was liberated by the Russians. After the war he emigrated to the U.S., where he aided fellow survivors, e.g. in the Jewish Survivors of Latvia organization, and spoke at many schools.

Miracles of Book and Body
Author: Charlotte Eubanks
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520265610
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
"This is an exciting exploration of the world of Buddhist attitudes towards religious texts, from Indian scriptures to Japanese medieval tales. Its emphasis on discursive strategies—how Buddhist texts function and what they expect of their readers/users (especially, the connection between books, their content, and their readers' bodies)—is a welcome new perspective."—Fabio Rambelli, author of Buddhist Materiality "Miracles of Book and Body is fluidly written and engaging. This book brings the reader to an awareness of the range and foci of medieval 'popular' readings of sutra literature, and Eubanks provides an important perspective to interpreting these narratives that is original and stimulating."—Thomas W. Hare, author of Zeami: Performance Notes "Charlotte Eubanks' sophisticated, insightful and readable study of the physicalities of sutra texts and sutra recitation makes sense of some of the strangest phenomena in medieval Japan. By disentangling the literal and metaphorical meanings in Buddhist setsuwa, Eubanks explains such things as how memorizing a text is an embodiment thereof, how texts can become sentient beings, and why the scroll is an appropriate format for recording dharma. Her work is both important and engaging."—Margaret H. Childs, University of Kansas "Drawing on an impressive range of Mahayana scriptures and medieval Japanese didactic tales, Eubanks unpacks recurrent tropes correlating text and flesh to reveal surprising connections among the literary, material, and ritual dimensions of Buddhist textual culture. Elegantly written and theoretically astute, this volume will be welcomed not only by specialists in Buddhist literature but also by readers interested in broader issues of text-based religious practice."—Jacqueline Stone, author of Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism

Dictionary of Christianity
Author: J.C. Cooper
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134265530
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 308
Book Description
First Published in 1996. A comprehensive reference guide to saints, popes, martyrs, orders, heresies, schisms and religious movements and practices, the Dictionary of Christianity is an alphabetically-arranged volume of essential facts about Christianity and the Christian church. It includes: accounts of the lives of theologians, philosophers, and reformers whose works influenced the development of Christianity; biblical statistics and information about the chief editions of the Bible; the lives of saints, including their feast days; and details about offices and vestments, rituals and festivals. In recent years there has been an upsurge in ecumenical movements, and increased communication between Eastern and Western Catholics and Protestants. There has also been an increase in the membership of the Eastern Church in Western countries and, with the fall of Communism in Russia, a revival of the Russian Orthodox Church. In responseto this phenomena, the Dictionary of Christianity covers all the main branches of the Christian church. It will be an invaluable reference for all students of religion.
