Excerpt from Damaged and Threatened National Historic Landmarks: 1991 Report An additional 192, the so-called Priority 2 Landmarks, face uncertain futures. This represents an increase of 19 over the previous year. Together, Priority 1 and 2 Landmarks account for over 16% of all National Historic Landmarks the same percentage that were listed as endangered in 1989. The leading cause of endangerment to Priority 1 Landmarks is severe physical deterioration of or damage to building materials. This is directly related to the fact that 75% of Priority 1 Landmarks are buildings or districts composed primarily of buildings and structures. Incompatible alterations to the Landmark buildings or inappropriate new construction, either within the boundaries of the Landmark or on adjacent property, threaten 25% of the endangered properties. Damaging new uses, site erosion, vandalism, and potential demolition are also major threats. Of the approximately 192 archeological resources that are designated National Historic Landmarks, 33, or approximately are listed as Priority 1 Landmarks for 1991. These figures indicate that archeological sites and districts appear more susceptible to threats and damage than other nationally significant resources. The primary threat to archeological sites is erosion, followed by inappropriate new construction and damaging uses, such as plowing. The following compilation of Most Endangered Historic Sites listings is composed of the first two years of the program (2000 and 2002) when it was administered (bi-annually) by the Preservation Alliance of Virginia, and following the merger of that organization with Preservation Virginia in 2004, annual lists from 2005 to the present. The following updates and status reports for each listing are believed to be current as of the posting of this document in August 2014. Where available, pertinent links to news stories and reports are included to help contextualize listings but are in no way exhaustive. Each listing has also been “graded” into four categories as a quick way to reference its current status. While the particulars of each site or issue are unique and nuanced, the following four categorizations can be used to approximately characterize each listing: SAVED: The immediate threat to a resource has been overcome and is not likely to reappear in the foreseeable future LOST: The resource has been demolished or its integrity altered enough to jeopardize its register eligibility STILL ENDANGERED: The threat present at the time of listing is still active, unresolved, and/or could likely reappear in the foreseeable future WATCH LIST: The resource is not currently, actively endangered but may still face threats and should continue to be monitored

Since 1988, the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list has been one of the most effective tools in the fight to save America's irreplaceable architectural, cultural, and natural heritage. Angel Island Immigration Station, one of 1999's 11 Most Endangered. The 11 sites chosen each year are threatened by neglect, insufficient funds, inappropriate development or insensitive public policy. Some are well-known, such as the Vieux Carr ̌in New Orleans or Ellis Island in New York Harbor. Others, like the Kennecott Copper Mines in Alaska or the village of East Aurora, New York, are less famous but just as important, because they too represent preservation challenges facing thousands of communities. Each site raises awareness about the dangers to specific parts of America's heritage and about preservation generally. The list has now brought national attention to 168 significant buildings, sites and landscapes. At times, that attention has galvanized public support to rescue a treasured landmark, while in others, it has been an opening salvo in a long battle to save an important piece of our history. 11 Most has been so successful at educating the public that now more than 20 states and numerous cities and towns publish their own lists of endangered places.
