The Historical Record, 1886 PDF Author: Andrew Jenson

Book Description
Excerpt from The Historical Record, 1886: A Monthly Periodical, Devoted Exclusively to Historical, Biographical, Chronological and Statistical Matters; Volumes V, Vi, VII and VIII; Church Encyclopedia, Book 1 When the author of this work, in 1886, began the publication of the Hrs'romcu. Record, it was his intention during the following four years to give the public a work of reference on Church history, covering the entire period from the Prophet Joseph Smith's birth to the present time. This could have been accomplished by the adoption of a uniform system of brev ity throughout; but having to rely on public patronage, in order to make the undertaking a possibility from a financial standpoint, it was found nec essary, as the work proceeded, to deviate somewhat from the original plan, and enter more deeply and minutely into matters pertaining to early Church history, which seemed to be of special interest to a majority of readers. Consequently, the four volumes, now completed, will be found to treat mostly upon matters pertaining to the progress of the Church previous to the location of its headquarters in Utah, and the narration of more modern incidents is reserved for a future work. The Biographical Encyclopedia of the United States

The Biographical Encyclopedia of the United States PDF Author: American Biographical Publishing Co
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Pages : 706

Book Description
Excerpt from The Biographical Encyclopedia of the United States: Illustrated In selecting names for the Biographical Encyclopedia of the United States, the publishers have aimed to give a life-sketch of the representatives of the various interests of our republic: the professional men, the business men, the agriculturists, and indeed all who have taken part in the intel lectual, political and material progress of the people. While engaged in the preparation and publication of this volume, a constant and strong incentive has been the belief of the publishers that theirs was a praiseworthy work, the fruits of which could not but supply a pressing need and command public commendation. Had it been otherwise, and had the only motive for their risk of capital and enormous expenditure of time and labor been the hope of pecuniary profit, they certainly could not have felt themselves justified in the undertaking. Until within a comparatively recent period, recording and preserving biographies has been confined to the few, the great or noted, while the history of that vast army of workers, whose life struggles, whose defeats and whose successes have contributed so largely to our national growth. And become so intimately identified with our institutions, has been passed over without comment. Unnoticed and unsung. That such should have been the case was but natural, as the outgrowth of that spirit of hero-worship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Encyclopedia of Biography of Minnesota, Vol. 1 PDF Author: Charles E. Flandrau
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780282852306
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 650

Book Description
Excerpt from Encyclopedia of Biography of Minnesota, Vol. 1: History of Minnesota Besides the history, the work contains the biographies of many of the prominent citizens of the State, with their portraits. We feel justified in saying that the workmanship and art bestowed on these portraits, is of superior excellence, both in the engraving and the perfection of the resemblance to the subjects portrayed, while the biographical sketches are authentic. It has been the aim of the pub lishers throughout, to include in the list only those who have, by their ability, industry and courage, contributed to the building of the State to its present eminence. Many have been omitted, who are, no doubt, entitled to a place on the roll 'o_i honor, their great number making it impracticable to include them all in one volume. These omissions may, however, be remedied in a subsequent volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. So much research is needed, so much time and care have to be expended on the examination, comparison and weighing of various statements, that the historian can only progress painfully and slowly. It has been a main object with the compiler to afford as great a variety as possible within the given space, and to render each article not only enter taining but useful. Among the historical and biographical notices will be found many events and characters of remarkable interest, but still so little connected with general history as not to have found a place in the common works on that subject. The details of hunting and travelling adventures are rich in character and of thrilling interest; and the description of London from the pen of Professor Sanderson abounds in those lively strokes of humor and delicate satire for which he.
