The illustrations are reproduced by map tesy of the Stevenson Society. The designs on the cover and the title/ page, and that used as a headpiece for the first page of text, are from a series of eighteen wood engravings made by Stevenson himself, of which but six sets of proofs have been preserved. I am indebted to The New York Times Review of Books for permission to reprint the verses entitled Friend 0' Mine.
