Self-sovereign identity (SSI) is a digital identity that is fully controlled and owned by the individual it represents. Unlike traditional centralized identity systems, SSI allows individuals to have autonomy over their own identity, what information is shared, with whom, and for what purposes. SSI is a relatively new concept, but we argue it has the potential to revolutionize how we manage identity and privacy in digital ecosystems. To explore the potential of SSI in smallholder farmers' data sharing and management, we partnered with Bluenumber Foundation to develop a data traceability pilot in Mexico for small-scale maize producers to manage their farm management data. This progress report from Bluenumber provides an overview of the project activities in 2022.

According to Forbes, we generate almost 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day. The next generation of agriculture heavily depends on data. The ability to capture, sort, analyze and extract actionable intelligence from large data sets to reveal patterns (human, climate, market) and related trends is an important emerging field. The increase in the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices would only add to this data deluge. The Economist rightly called data as the world’s most valuable resource , while some calling data the new oil . Agriculture would be one of the major users of IoTs. How can individuals, organizations and governments build capacities and processes in place to take advantage of this huge influx of data. This coupled with existing data streams (weather, satellite imagery, markets etc.,) would create an ecosystem which if managed efficiently would provide rich dividents especially in the agriculture sector where the right information at the right time will make a great influence in the livelihoods of people involved in agriculture and allied activities. This publication looks at how various initiatives are leveraging data, related to agriculture value chains, to influence decision making and efficient service delivery together with addressing key building blocks such as interoperability, data sharing, data security and the necessary policies and regulations that are needed to be implemented to sustain the data ecosystem.

[Foreword] The challenges in agriculture are rapidly increasing with the impact of climate change, land degradation and natural disasters. This is affecting the global food production and supply chain which has been aggravated due to Covid-19 pandemic and this calls for more resilient and sustainable food systems. The Asia-Pacific region which has the largest number of small holder farmers and is trying to meet the sustainable development goals of United Nations has lot of responsibilities to mitigate the challenges. In this scenario Blockchain Technology has come as a respite to contribute as one of the ways to mitigate the challenges. The benefits of Blockchain in agriculture include easy and cheap food batch recalls in case of emergencies, availability of the complete history of the product status, increased customer trust and loyalty, fairer payments, approved vendors, and proper compliance management. The global blockchain in agriculture and food supply chain market size estimated at USD 133 million in 2020 is expected to reach USD 948 million by 2025. Factors such as the increasing need to lower operational costs in financial transactions and the reduction of the number of layers required for data sharing and risk management and the regulatory compliances that automate and conduct only authorized transactions are driving the technology adoption. The key drivers to blockchain in agriculture and food supply chain market are an increase in demand for the agricultural produce output surge, the use of smart agriculture among the growers or producers, government initiatives to support modern techniques that can be used in agriculture, and rising concerns for food safety among the consumers driving the increase in demand for the transparency in the supply chain. Increase in the popularity of blockchain among retailers/ distributors is due to rise in the tracking and tracing of various food products. Data management and data aggregation are major challenges in the precision farming market. The lack of standardization of the communication interfaces and protocols may result in the misrepresentation of the data. The present volume is intended to collate the information on the status of blockchain in the Asian region with various case studies. Thirty years of Ä?ổi Má»›i (economic renovation) reforms have catapulted Vietnam from the ranks of the world’s poorest countries to one of its great development success stories. Critical ingredients have been visionary leaders, a sense of shared societal purpose, and a focus on the future. Starting in the late 1980s, these elements were successfully fused with the embrace of markets and the global economy. Economic growth since then has been rapid, stable, and inclusive, translating into strong welfare gains for the vast majority of the population. But three decades of success from reforms raises expectations for the future, as aptly captured in the Vietnamese constitution, which sets the goal of “a prosperous people and a strong, democratic, equitable, and civilized country.†? There is a firm aspiration that by 2035, Vietnam will be a modern and industrialized nation moving toward becoming a prosperous, creative, equitable, and democratic society. The Vietnam 2035 report, a joint undertaking of the Government of Vietnam and the World Bank Group, seeks to better comprehend the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It shows that the country’s aspirations and the supporting policy and institutional agenda stand on three pillars: balancing economic prosperity with environmental sustainability; promoting equity and social inclusion to develop a harmonious middle- class society; and enhancing the capacity and accountability of the state to establish a rule of law state and a democratic society. Vietnam 2035 further argues that the rapid growth needed to achieve the bold aspirations will be sustained only if it stands on faster productivity growth and reflects the costs of environmental degradation. Productivity growth, in turn, will benefit from measures to enhance the competitiveness of domestic enterprises, scale up the benefits of urban agglomeration, and build national technological and innovative capacity. Maintaining the record on equity and social inclusion will require lifting marginalized groups and delivering services to an aging and urbanizing middle-class society. This paper considers different approaches to modelling the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic/lockdown shocks. We review different modelling strategies and argue that, given the nature of the bottom-up recession caused by the pandemic/lockdowns, simulation models of the shocks should be based on a social accounting matrix (SAM) that includes both disaggregated sectoral data and the national accounts in a unified framework. SAM-based models have been widely used to analyze the impact of natural disasters, which are comparable to pandemic/lockdown shocks. The pandemic/lockdown shocks occurred rapidly, in weeks or months, not gradually over a year or more. In such a short period, adjustments through smooth changes in wages, prices and production methods are not plausible. Rather, initial adjustments occur through changes in quantities, altering demand and supply of commodities and employment in affected sectors. In this environment, we use a linear SAM-multiplier model that specifies a fixed-coefficient production technology, linear demand system, fixed savings rates, and fixed prices. There are three different kinds of sectoral shocks that are included in the model: (1) changes in demand due to household lockdown, (2) changes in supply due to industry lockdown, and (3) changes in demand due to induced macro shocks. At the detailed industry level, data are provided for all three shocks and the model imposes the largest of the three. We applied the model on a monthly time step for the period March to June 2020 for four countries: US, UK, Mexico, and South Africa. The models closely replicate observed macro results (GDP and employment) for the period. The results provide detailed structural information on the evolution of the different economies month-by-month and provide a framework for forward-looking scenario analysis. We also use the SAM-multiplier model to estimate the macro stimulus impacts of policies to support affected households. The model focuses attention on the structural features of the economy that define the multiplier process (who gets the additional income and what do they do with it) and provides a more nuanced analysis of the stimulus impact of income support programs than can be done with aggregated macro models.
