"The purpose of this 5-week action research study was to discover strategies teachers can implement in their classrooms to reduce math anxiety in female students. With the theoretical rationale of the hierarchy of needs theory (Maslow, 1943) and the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2002) literature was analyzed regarding the various aspects of math anxiety. Data were collected through pre- and post-surveys, student work samples, observational field notes, and interviews with 13 first-grade participants using descriptive statistics (Mills, 2014) and constant comparison (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). The results of these data concluded that first-grade students of both genders have similar levels of math anxiety, meditation and positive modeling encourage students to feel comfortable in the classroom, and by sending positive notes home, facilitating class discussions, and practicing breathing exercises with students, girls' math anxiety either stayed the same or decreased while their participation in our math period increased."--Abstract, p. 1.
