This qualitative study compares perceptions of Master of Business Administration (MBA) students and recent MBA graduates with those of employers of recent MBA graduates and MBA faculty regarding the skills, competencies, and experiences needed to be successful in their new graduate jobs. The researcher gathered stakeholder perspectives of the skills, competencies and experiences needed to create successful new MBA graduates through surveys and archival data. Stakeholders included recent MBA graduates, MBA students, MBA faculty, and employers of recent MBA graduates. Analysis included MBA graduates, MBA employers, MBA faculty, and higher education practices. Results suggest that critical thinking, communication, teamwork, leadership along with data analysis are the necessary skills, competencies, and experiences needed to be successful in a recent MBA graduate position. This research further validates the extant research of DiMartino and Castaneda (2007), which indicated that the skills new job entrants most need for success in the workplace include oral and written communication, time management, critical thinking, problem solving, personal accountability, and the ability to work effectively with others. Implications of this research are to advance the academic preparation of MBA students; to improve their oral and written communications skills, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and data analysis.

The value of master's level business education has been previously studied primarily through cost/benefit analysis, generally confirming that MBAs make more money. This study addresses the large question of the value of business master's education by carving out a small area of interest. It looks at the relationship of individual differences to perceptions of organizational mobility, which is a precursor to voluntary turnover. Three research questions are investigated. The first question is the relationship of cognitive ability to perceived organizational mobility. Cognitive ability was not seen by itself to be significantly related to perceived organizational mobility. In conjunction with high self-efficacy, high cognitive ability was shown to be related to perceived organizational mobility. This indicates that the highest functioning workers may be the greatest risk of voluntary turnover. The second research question addressed differences between generalist MBA students and specialized master's students in their perceptions of organizational mobility. Human capital theory would predict that generalists have more potential organizations to work for and would therefore be attractive to a greater number of other firms. This hypothesis was not supported. It was also hypothesized that the presence of an expected outcome of a pay raise or promotion would be influential in perceptions of organizational mobility and this hypothesis was supported. The third research question involves goals and intentions of workers who return to school for an advanced business degree. It was found that a desire for professional advancement was more influential toward perceived organizational mobility than a desire to seek knowledge. A careerist orientation, which is characterized by opportunism, was also significantly related to perceived organizational mobility. This indicates that ambition is influential to perceived organizational mobility. A field study was conducted through the use of a web-based survey of working master's students. Usable data was captured from 165 survey respondents. Archival data was furnished through records available. Eight hypotheses were tested through hierarchical moderated regression analyses. Support was found for four of the eight hypotheses.

Students invest a great deal of time, effort, and capital to obtain the MBA credential that they believe will provide them with the skills necessary to succeed in business. They expect such skills to position them for better job opportunities, salary increases, and a faster track to promotion up the corporate ladder. It is an investment that should yield rewards. However, the value of an MBA is open to skepticism by some. Critics have questioned the appropriateness of the skills that have become part of the typical curriculum and the ability of business programs to keep pace with a changing business environment. While students continue to believe in the value of the MBA, there is little current evidence to determine if the perception of employers toward its value has changed. Historical evidence demonstrates negative bias by some employers toward non-traditional degrees, such as those offered by online programs, due to a perception of student isolation and lack of collaboration in the online learning community. As technology advances and some of these perception issues are addressed, the lines between traditional and non-traditional program formats have become blurred. Consequently, demand for online programs, and the flexibility that they offer, has been strong. There is recent evidence that the public is more accepting of the non-traditional programs. This investigation was designed to expand the learning environment knowledge base. Employers and MBA graduates were queried on the importance and mastery of skills necessary in the workplace, the environment, traditional and non-traditional, and the rewards. The goal was to ascertain how the MBA is currently valued, and how the choice of program has met expectations. Using a cross-sectional survey design employing a questionnaire, alumni of MBA programs and employers were surveyed. Both groups identified problem solving, communication, and decision-making as the most essential skills that MBAs should bring to the workplace, and mastery of those skills was generally viewed as positive. Online learning was viewed positively, although employers continue to prefer on-campus learning. The role of technology was viewed by alumni as enhancing the online experience by facilitating interactivity. Overall, most were positive about the MBA experience and its rewards, but were less enthusiastic about the cost-benefit.
