Freedom from an Illusion of Freedom

Freedom from an Illusion of Freedom PDF Author: Patrick Lemon
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1483644499
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
First let me mention that the main characters in the book are the readers and the readers are the audience too. Find out how and what character describes you best throughout the novel. Fear is one of the main forces that create this illusion of freedom. "Just because you are scared does not mean you are entitled to back down," (Lemon). Believing the belief that you are free is the very belief that creates this illusion. Then this belief traps you within an illusion of freedom and is the very belief that prevents you from realizing you are not free by any means of what you thought freedom was and what freedom really is. You believing that belief is what prevent you from discovering, seeing, understanding and experiencing what true freedom is and means. My book is a manuscript that offers the following: internal psychology, optimistic/positive psychology, reflective psychology, self-improvement psychology, self-knowledge psychology, therapy, spirituality, sociology, philosophy, workology, streetology, survivology (higher survival awareness /teens and adults), better relationship awareness (work, couples, or in general) and is a parental guide. This is not a conspiracy theory novel nor is it fiction. It is real events and real experiences anyone can experience. This book is a self-improvement; self-developmental novel that shows people how to find and bring out their deep rooted power, true freedom, and potential of which they never knew existed or never knew how to bring out.

Freedom Evolves

Freedom Evolves PDF Author: Daniel C. Dennett
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101572663
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
Can there be freedom and free will in a deterministic world? Renowned philosopher Daniel Dennett emphatically answers “yes!” Using an array of provocative formulations, Dennett sets out to show how we alone among the animals have evolved minds that give us free will and morality. Weaving a richly detailed narrative, Dennett explains in a series of strikingly original arguments—drawing upon evolutionary biology, cognitive neuroscience, economics, and philosophy—that far from being an enemy of traditional explorations of freedom, morality, and meaning, the evolutionary perspective can be an indispensable ally. In Freedom Evolves, Dennett seeks to place ethics on the foundation it deserves: a realistic, naturalistic, potentially unified vision of our place in nature.

The Illusion of Freedom

The Illusion of Freedom PDF Author: Tom Gallagher
Publisher: Hurst & Company
ISBN: 9781850659969
Category : Decentralization in government
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Alex Salmond's Scottish National Party is currently mounting Scotland's biggest challenge to the British union since the conception of the nation. Nevertheless, as Tom Gallagher makes clear, if the Union were demolished, widespread change would still remain elusive. Close-knit administrative, commercial, and religious elites continue to run Scotland with no strategy for reviving its economy and reforming its urban centers. Gallagher contends that the SNP is not committed to independence. Rather, it exists as a super-unionist party recoiling from popular sovereignty, seeking instead the federalist rule of a postnational Europe. Gallagher also points to the SNP's endorsement of a radical multiculturalism that devalues individual citizenship and places Scotland at the losing end of globalization. His hard-hitting analysis is beyond provocative, especially in its claim that if the SNP triumphs, the party will reinforce the very authoritarian trends that have disfigured Scottish history and encouraged emigration for decades.

The Cunning of Freedom

The Cunning of Freedom PDF Author: Ryszard Legutko
Publisher: Encounter Books
ISBN: 1641771380
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 149

Book Description
This book has two currents. The first is an analysis of the three concepts of freedom that are called, respectively, negative, positive, and inner. Negative freedom is defined as an absence of coercion, positive freedom as an ability to rule oneself and others, inner freedom as being oneself; that is, being the author of one’s decisions. Each concept is analyzed both in terms of its development in the history of ideas and in terms of its internal logic. The major problem of negative freedom is to find widely accepted rules according to which this freedom can be distributed. Positive freedom’s major difficulty is to define what constitutes a free person. The greatest dilemma with inner freedom is how to correlate it with the proper interpretation of the human self. The book advances the thesis, and this constitutes the other current of its narrative—that we have been witnessing the advent of a new form of despotism, much of it being the effect of liberalism’s dominant position. Precisely because it took a reductionist position, liberalism has impoverished our view of freedom and, consequently, our notion of human nature with its political, moral, and metaphysical dimensions.

The Glass Palace

The Glass Palace PDF Author: Nasser M. Beydoun
Publisher: Algora Publishing
ISBN: 0875869556
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
When Americans read in today's news that Qatar is funding rebel groups across the Middle East, few of us have any idea what Qatar is or how it is run. A nation of perhaps 250,000 locals served by 1.35 million foreign workers, the emirate is burning its gas and oil revenue at a break-neck pace in an effort to build a position on the global stage. Is Qatar actually a suitable ally or a legitimate partner for the United States? Under Qatari labor law, foreign workers are actually owned, for all practical purposes, by their Qatari sponsors in a system akin to slavery. This book chronicles the experience of an American executive working in Qatar and delves into Qatar's feudal work-sponsorship system, showing that an economic great leap forward is not necessarily accompanied by modernization, despite superficial emblems; that prosperity and democracy need not go hand in hand; and that being a US ally may be totally unrelated to any notion of human rights or personal liberties. There are other Western expats still trapped in Qatar. Yet American workers, students and others blithely interact with Qatar as if it were a 'normal' (i.e., Westernized) nation where one may navigate with confidence. It is nothing of the sort. In the meantime Qatar, under the leadership of an emir who overthrew his own father, is fostering international unrest across the entire Arab world, while racing to build a modern-looking city from scratch. Some of the economic, environmental and demographic assumptions underlying these plans are worthy of another 1000 tales from Arabia. American businessman Nasser Beydoun found out for himself how quickly the Qataris are moving when he embarked on an exciting new career path, leaving his hometown of Dearborn, Michigan, to move to Qatar to manage the opening of several chain restaurants as part of the sudden economic boom there. It didn't take long for the deal to turn sour, but Beydoun didn't realize the extent of his problem until he tried to leave the country — and was stopped at the border. In this book he paints a general picture of life in this fantastical realm while relaying his personal struggle to escape a legal runaround worthy of Kafka's novels.

Free Will

Free Will PDF Author: Sam Harris
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1451683405
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of The End of Faith, a thought-provoking, "brilliant and witty" (Oliver Sacks) look at the notion of free will—and the implications that it is an illusion. A belief in free will touches nearly everything that human beings value. It is difficult to think about law, politics, religion, public policy, intimate relationships, morality—as well as feelings of remorse or personal achievement—without first imagining that every person is the true source of his or her thoughts and actions. And yet the facts tell us that free will is an illusion. In this enlightening book, Sam Harris argues that this truth about the human mind does not undermine morality or diminish the importance of social and political freedom, but it can and should change the way we think about some of the most important questions in life.
