Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Physics, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Natural Philosophy, General and Medical, Explained Independently of Technical Mathematics, and Containing New Disquisitions and Practical Suggestions Astronomy, which is the instance chosen above, is only one of innumerable subjects, which, when imperfectly understood, appear obscure and difficult, but when more fully investigated, become simplicity itself. As an exam ple from the studies of medical men may be mentioned the question of the movement of the blood in the veins, which has lately been discussed in medical societies and reviews with considerable earnestness. In this question, the appeal is necessarily made to the laws of Natural Philosophy, which govern the phenomenon; but because the study of these has been little cultivated by the facul ty, more time has been absorbed in futile disputation and experiment than would have sufficed for acquiring a competent knowledge of the whole body of Physics now the single section of Physics, which bears on the point if understood in a moderate degree, would have caused all the difficulties at once to vanish. The circu lation of the blood, again, is but one of numerous and scarcely less important subjects in the medical art to which Natural Philosophy is the easy and only key. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Physics, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Natural Philosophy, General and Medical, Explained Independently of Technical Mathematics, and Containing New Disquisitions and Practical Suggestions The statement, although paradoxical, is true, that human knowledge, the more it is accumulated and perfected, is also the more easily acquired and recollected. As an instance, we may refer to our present knowledge of the celestial motions. These, to our ancestors, appeared so inexplicable, that to observe and analyze them, some of the most gifted individuals devoted their lives - yet when at last, by the penetrating genius of Newton, they were contemplated through the records of many centuries, they were found all to range themselves under a few simple expressions easily intelligible and easily remembered by an ordinary mind. Thus, now, not only is the confusion of past times, in regard to astronomy, converted into a scene of beautiful simplicity and harmony, but we are able to predict, with certainty, many of the changes which are to happen in time to come. A Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics: Volume 1

A Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics: Volume 1 PDF Author: Paul Bamberg
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107392853
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 428

Book Description
This textbook, available in two volumes, has been developed from a course taught at Harvard over the last decade. The course covers principally the theory and physical applications of linear algebra and of the calculus of several variables, particularly the exterior calculus. The authors adopt the 'spiral method' of teaching, covering the same topic several times at increasing levels of sophistication and range of application. Thus the reader develops a deep, intuitive understanding of the subject as a whole, and an appreciation of the natural progression of ideas. Topics covered include many items previously dealt with at a much more advanced level, such as algebraic topology (introduced via the analysis of electrical networks), exterior calculus, Lie derivatives, and star operators (which are applied to Maxwell's equations and optics). This then is a text which breaks new ground in presenting and applying sophisticated mathematics in an elementary setting. Any student, interpreted in the widest sense, with an interest in physics and mathematics, will gain from its study.

Elements of Modern Physics

Elements of Modern Physics PDF Author: S. H. Patil
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030701433
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
This book covers important concepts and applications of contemporary physics. The book emphasizes logical development of the subject and attempts to maintain rigor in the analytical discussions. The text has been presented in a concise and lucid manner. A modern description of properties and interaction of particle is given along with discussions on topics such as cosmology, laser and applications. The concepts are illustrated by numerous worked examples. Selected problems given at the end of each chapter help students to evaluate their skills. The book with its simple style, comprehensive and up-to-date coverage is highly useful for physics students. The detailed coverage and pedagogical tools make this an ideal book also for the engineering students studying core courses in physics.
