Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Military Science and the Art of War The following lectures have been prepared as a military science course in the University, to meet the requirements of the "theoretical instruction" prescribed in General Order No. 93, Adjutant's General's Office, series 1893, for institutions of learning receiving the detail of an Army Officer to act as professor of military science and tactics. The lectures have been prepared upon the assumption that students have drilled one year and have become proficient in infantry drill regulations to include battalion movements, and in artillery drill regulations to include the "School of the Cannoneers." These lectures will be bound in three "parts," Part I being intended as a text-book for sophomores, Part II for juniors and Part III for seniors. These books may also be found useful to National Guard Officers, and Noncommissioned Officers, as they constitute a progressive course, leading up from armory drill to battle tactics. Preface to Second Edition. In this edition the three "parts" are hound as one book of 12 chapters for use as a text-book for volunteer troops as well as national guardsmen and military colleges; - it having been suggested by officers who have used the separate "parts" of the first edition, that the twelve lectures, taken together, afford a complete elementary course for those who are hastily preparing for military service, and just what they need to go with "drill regulations." The appendix contains some practical lessons gathered from my recent service with our Army in Cuba. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Publisher: Modern Library
ISBN: 0375754776
Category : History

Pages : 1024

Book Description
Two classic works of military strategy that shaped the way we think about warfare: The Art of War by Sun Tzu and On War by Karl von Clausewitz, together in one volume “Civilization might have been spared much of the damage suffered in the world wars . . . if the influence of Clausewitz’s On War had been blended with and balanced by a knowledge of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.”—B. H. Liddel Hart For two thousand years, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War has been the indispensable volume of warcraft. Although his work is the first known analysis of war and warfare, Sun Tzu struck upon a thoroughly modern concept: “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” Karl von Clausewitz, the canny military theorist who famously declared that war is a continuation of politics by other means, also claims paternity of the notion “total war.” On War is the magnum opus of the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. Now these two great minds come together in a single volume that also features an introduction by esteemed military writer Ralph Peters and the Modern Library War Series introduction by Caleb Carr, New York Times bestselling author of The Alienist. (The cover and text refer to The Art of War as The Art of Warfare, an alternate translation of the title.)

Command Of The Air

Command Of The Air PDF Author: General Giulio Douhet
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1782898522
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 620

Book Description
In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.

Battling to the End

Battling to the End PDF Author: René Girard
Publisher: MSU Press
ISBN: 1609171330
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
In Battling to the End René Girard engages Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831), the Prussian military theoretician who wrote On War. Clausewitz, who has been critiqued by military strategists, political scientists, and philosophers, famously postulated that "War is the continuation of politics by other means." He also seemed to believe that governments could constrain war. Clausewitz, a firsthand witness to the Napoleonic Wars, understood the nature of modern warfare. Far from controlling violence, politics follows in war's wake: the means of war have become its ends. René Girard shows us a Clausewitz who is a fascinated witness of history's acceleration. Haunted by the French-German conflict, Clausewitz clarifies more than anyone else the development that would ravage Europe. Battling to the End pushes aside the taboo that prevents us from seeing that the apocalypse has begun. Human violence is escaping our control; today it threatens the entire planet.
