Magnetic Fields, Special Relativity and Potential Theory

Magnetic Fields, Special Relativity and Potential Theory PDF Author: B. H. Chirgwin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 148313931X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
Magnetic Fields, Special Relativity and Potential Theory is an introduction to electromagnetism, special relativity, and potential theory, with emphasis on the magnetic field of steady currents (magnetostatics). Topics covered range from the origin of the magnetic field and the magnetostatic scalar potential to magnetization, electromagnetic induction and magnetic energy, and the displacement current and Maxwell's equations. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with an overview of magnetostatics, followed by a chapter on the methods of solving potential problems drawn from electrostatics, magnetism, current flow, and gravitation. Relaxing the constraint of stationary steady currents, the next chapter considers electromagnetic induction when the current strengths in closed circuits vary or when the circuits move. This leads to the necessity of assessing the breakdown of Newtonian ideas and the introduction of special relativity. When the constraint of closed circuits is further relaxed and the motion of charges in open circuits is taken into account, the discussion turns to displacement current because of the relativistic theory already set up, leading to Maxwell's equations. This book will be a valuable resource for undergraduate students of physics.

The Principles of Electromagnetic Theory and of Relativity

The Principles of Electromagnetic Theory and of Relativity PDF Author: M.-A. Tonnelat
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401035504
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
The aim of this work is to study the principles upon which the classical and relativistic theories of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields are based. Thus, the primary object of the book is to present a simple exposition of Maxwell's theory, of General Relativity and of the link between those two concepts, namely, Special Relativity. In the nineteenth century the notion of a continuous field gradually replaced the idea of action at a distance. The electromagnetic theory that was elaborated at that time covers a very large area of Physics, since it makes possible the description of permanent phenomena, electrostatics and magnetostatics, as well as of variable phenomena. It anticipates the existence of waves, and thereby the theory of light is annexed to this vast domain. It was discovered that Maxwell's equations changed their form when they were related to reference systems associated with two observers in rectilinear uniform motion with respect to each other and each endowed with the absolute time required by classical mechanics. This was a most remarkable fact. Indeed, as soon as attempts were made to verify the results of classical kinematics by means of experiments with the propa gation of light, there arose a whole series of contradictions.

Maxwell's Equations and Their Consequences

Maxwell's Equations and Their Consequences PDF Author: B. H. Chirgwin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483156400
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 171

Book Description
Elementary Electromagnetic Theory Volume 3: Maxwell’s Equations and their Consequences is the third of three volumes that intend to cover electromagnetism and its potential theory. The third volume considers the implications of Maxwell's equations, such as electromagnetic radiation in simple cases, and its relation between Maxwell's equation and the Lorenz transformation. Included in this volume are chapters 11-14, which contain an in-depth discussion of the following topics: • Electromagnetic Waves • The Lorentz Invariance of Maxwell's Equation • Radiation • Motion of Charged Particles Intended to serve as an introduction to electromagnetism and potential theory, the book is for second, third, and fourth year undergraduates of physics and engineering, as they are included in their course of study. Do note that the authors assume that the readers are conversant with the basic ideas of vector analysis, including vector integral theorems.

A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field

Book Description
"We owe Clerk Maxwell the precise formulation of the space-time laws of electromagnetic fields. Imagine his own feelings when the partial differential equations he formulated spread in the form of polarized waves with the speed of light! This change in the understanding of the structure of reality is the most profound and fruitful that has come to physics since Newton."--Albert Einstein
