Unfuck Your Brain

Unfuck Your Brain PDF Author: Faith G. Harper, PhD, LPC-S, ACS, ACN
Publisher: Microcosm Publishing
ISBN: 1621060403
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
Our brains are doing our best to help us out, but they can be real assholes sometimes. Sometimes it seems like your own brain is out to get you—melting down in the middle of the grocery store, picking fights with your date, getting you addicted to something, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. You already told your brain firmly that it isn't good to do these things. But your brain has a mind of its own. That's where this book comes in. With humor, patience, and lots of swearing, Dr. Faith shows you the science behind what's going on in your skull and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately to the non-emergencies of everyday life. If you're working to deal with old traumas, or if you just want to have a more measured and chill response to situations you face all the time, this book can help you put the pieces of the puzzle together and get your life and brain back. Here's an excerpt from the book:Knowing what’s going on up in your brain is HUGE. So much of how we interact with the world around us is a completely normal response when we take into account our past experiences and how our brains work. • Freaking the fuck out • Avoiding important shit we need to take care of • Feeling pissed off all the time • Being a dick to people we care about • Putting shit in our bodies that we know isn’t good for us • Doing shit we know is dumb or pointlessNone of these things are fucking helpful. But they all make sense.Your brain has adapted to the circumstances in your life and started doing things to protect you, bless it. It’s not TRYING to fuck you over (even though it totally is, at times). As we navigate the world, nasty shit happens. The brain stores info about the nasty shit to try to avoid it in the future. Sometimes these responses are helpful. Sometimes the responses become a bigger problem than the actual problem was. It’s called a trauma reaction. And even if you aren’t dealing with a specific trauma? Adaptive coping strategies, bad habits, and funky behaviors all wire in similar ways. And research is showing that these issues are actually some of the easier ones to treat in therapy … if we address what’s really going on, rather than just the symptoms.

Pages : 192

Book Description
Everyone has insecurities. Like with most insecurities-especially those that are not self-inflicted-we don't tend to "fix" or "get over" them; they are always with us and a part of who we are. However, if we are honest with ourselves, we can recognize them, understand them, and seek to find a way to live our most authentic lives free from the chaos they often create. Alex Geesbreght'sThe Chaos Parallel: How to Overcome the Life-Altering Effects of Insecurity allows us to see the world as it is, not as we wish it were. Readers will learn to search for and recognize "The Thing Behind the Thing"--in other words, the "why" behind the shiny object in front of them. The Chaos Parallel highlights the tremendous impact our insecurities have on our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions, which often have deleterious effects on our relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and most importantly, ourselves. Praise for The Chaos Parallel "The Chaos Parallel takes us on a journey into understanding how our insecurities play such a critical role in keeping us from experiencing what is real, even though it seems real at the time ... Be encouraged as Alex shares his story and through it moves us towards authentic living. Whether in work, or marriage, or family life, The Chaos Parallel will reveal some unsettling things about yourself. But in the end, it will help you discover the real you ..." --Dave Dravecky Former Major League Baseball Player Motivational Speaker and Author "In The Chaos Parallel, Alex Geesbreght achieves for business psychology what Daniel Kahneman achieved for behavioral economics: he presents a highly complex and sometimes uncomfortable subject in a digestible and highly entertaining and personal format. This book is a must for any entrepreneur who wants to drive themselves and their organization to the next level." --Carson Yost, CFA CEO, Yost Capital Management, L.P. "A powerful, life-changing book that everyone needs to read ... His comedic--yet authentic--life story and thought-provoking personal discovery will challenge and encourage you at any stage of life." --Kevin Conway NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year FIA Lamborghini World Champion Cofounder, PHOOZY

All Cry Chaos

All Cry Chaos PDF Author: Leonard Rosen
Publisher: Permanent Press (NY)
ISBN: 9781579624651
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
All Cry Chaos, a debut thriller by the immensely gifted Leonard Rosen, is a masterful and gripping tale that literally reaches for the heavens. The action begins when mathematician James Fenster is assassinated on the eve of a long-scheduled speech at a World Trade Organization meeting. The hit is as elegant as it is bizarre. Fenster's Amsterdam hotel room is incinerated, yet the rest of the building remains intact. The murder trail leads veteran Interpol agent Henri Poincare on a high-stakes, world-crossing quest for answers. Together with his chain-smoking, bon vivant colleague Serge Laurent, Poincare pursues a long list of suspects: the Peruvian leader of the Indigenous Liberation Front, Rapture-crazed militants, a hedge fund director, Fenster's elusive ex-fiance, and a graduate student in mathematics. Poincare begins to make progress in America, but there is a prodigious hatred trained on him --some unfinished business from a terrifying former genocide case-- and he is called back to Europe to face the unfathomable. Stripped down and in despair, tested like Job, he realizes the two cases might be connected and he might be the link.

By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed. Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and the steps needed to heal them. People are often traumatized by seemingly ordinary experiences. The reader is taken on a guided tour of the subtle, yet powerful impulses that govern our responses to overwhelming life events. To do this, it employs a series of exercises that help us focus on bodily sensations. Through heightened awareness of these sensations trauma can be healed.

Using Stress-Based Animal Models to Understand the Mechanisms Underlying Psychiatric and Somatic Disorders

Using Stress-Based Animal Models to Understand the Mechanisms Underlying Psychiatric and Somatic Disorders PDF Author: Stefan O. Reber
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2889450848
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 131

Book Description
Chronic or repeated stress, particularly psychosocial stress, is an acknowledged risk factor for numerous affective and somatic disorders in modern societies. Thus, there is substantial evidence showing that chronic stress can increase the likelihood of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, as well as cardiovascular diseases, irritable bowel syndrome and pain syndromes, to name but a few, in vulnerable individuals. Although a number of pharmacological agents are available to treat such stress-related disorders, many patients do not respond to them, and those who do often report a number of side effects. Therefore, a major emphasis in modern basic research is to uncover the underlying aetiology of these disorders, and to develop novel efficacious treatment strategies. This has led to a resurgence in developing, and using, appropriate animal models to study a wide variety of stress-related disorders. Thus, the aim of this research topic “Using stress-based animal models to understand the mechanisms underlying psychiatric and somatic disorders” was to bring together novel research articles and comprehensive review articles from prominent stress researchers. In addition to describing the insights such models have provided relating to the aetiology of psychiatric and somatic disorders, these articles also encompass mechanisms that are believed to underlie stress resilience and stress-protection. Finally, given the current prominence on the role of the brain-gut axis in health and disease, the research topic covers the emerging evidence showing how the gut, particularly the microbiota, influences affective behaviour and physiology.
