ISBN: 1475703198

Book Description
The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Electronic Structure of Polymers and Molecular Crystals" was held at the Facultes Universi taires de Namur (F.U.N.) from September 1st till September 14th, 1974. We wish to express our appreciation to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division whose generous support made this Institute possible and to the Facultes Universitaires de Namur and the Societe Chimique de Belgique which provided fellowships and travel grants to a number of students. This volume contains the main lectures about the basic principles of the field and about different recent developments of the theory of the electronic structure of polymers and molecular crystals. The school started with the presentation of the basic SCF-LCAO theory of the electronic structure of periodic polymers and molecular crystals (contributions by Ladik, Andre & Delhalle) showing how a combination of quantum chemical and solid state physical methods can provide band structures for these systems. The numerical aspects of these calculations were also discussed. Lectures by Mahan have shown how optical properties of molecular crystals can be interpreted on the basis of the exciton theory. Little has reviewed the present status of the hypothesis about excitonic superconductivity and the different approaches to synthesize a superconductive polymer. McCubbin in his first series of lectures has given a very precise group theoretical treatment of the symmetry properties of polymers. Atkins' lectures have covered both the theoretical aspects of X-ray structure determination and its application to different polymers.

From Molecules to Molecular Systems

From Molecules to Molecular Systems PDF Author: Saburo Nagakura
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 4431668683
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
Molecular systems are assemblies of molecules designed to possess special qualities and desired functionality. Such systems are important because they provide materials with novel properties, and they will be particularly useful for minimizing electronic devices. Molecular systems often form organized molecular crystals, polymers, or thin films that are significantly more complex than current materials. To provide a sound basis for understanding these levels of complexity, this book provides an analysis of the fundamentals of electronic structures, dynamic processes in condensed phases, and the unique properties of organic molecular solids and the environmental effects on these properties. Also covered are the latest methods in physical chemistry that are particularly useful for deriving and controlling the functionality of molecular systems. A second volume subtitled From Molecular Systems to Molecular Devices is also being published.

Quantum Theory of Polymers as Solids

Quantum Theory of Polymers as Solids PDF Author: Janos J. Ladik
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468452339
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
The goal of this monograph is to summarize the different quantum mechanical methods developed in the last 20 years to treat the electronic structure of polymers. Owing to the nature of the problem, these methods consist of a mixture of quantum-chemical and solid-state physical tech niques. The theory described in Part I treats, besides the Hartree-Fock problem, the· electron correlation, and it has also been developed for disordered polymeric systems. Though for obvious reasons the book could not include all the existing calculations, each new method des cribed is illustrated by a few applications, with a discussion of the numerical results obtained. Far more details see the Introduction to Part I. The second part contains the theoretical calculation of different properties of polymers based on the methods systematically introduced in the first part. The properties calculated include the electronic and vibrational spectra of polymers, and the computation of their transport, magnetic, and mechanical properties. In cases where reliable ex perimental data are available, the theoretical results are compared with them.

Polymers, Liquid Crystals, and Low-Dimensional Solids

Polymers, Liquid Crystals, and Low-Dimensional Solids PDF Author: Norman H. March
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461323673
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 635

Book Description
This book deals with three related areas having both fundamental and technological interest. In the first part, the objective is to provide a bird's eye view on structure in polymeric solids. This is then complemented by a chapter, directly technological in its emphasis, dealing with the influence of processing on polymeric materials. In spite of the technological interest, this leads to some of the current fundamental theory. Part II, concerned with liquid crystals, starts with a discussion of the physics of the various types of material, and concludes with a treatment of optical applications. Again, aspects of the theory are stressed though this part is basically phenomenological in character. In Part III, an account is given first of the use of chemical-bonding arguments in understanding the electronic structure of low-dimensional solids, followed by a comprehensive treatment of the influence of dimen sionality on phase transitions. A brief summary of dielectric screening in low-dimensional solids follows. Space-charge layers are then treated, including semiconductor inversion layers. Effects of limited dimensionality on superconductivity are also emphasized. Part IV concludes the volume with two specialized topics: electronic structure of biopolymers, and topological defects and disordered systems. The Editors wish to acknowledge that this book had its origins in the material presented at a course organized by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste.

Conjugated Polymeric Materials: Opportunities in Electronics, Optoelectronics, and Molecular Electronics

Conjugated Polymeric Materials: Opportunities in Electronics, Optoelectronics, and Molecular Electronics PDF Author: J.L. Brédas
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400920415
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 591

Book Description
This book constitutes the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Conjugated Polymers held at the University of Mons, Belgium, during the first week of September 1989. The Workshop was attended by about fifty scientists representing most of the leading research groups within NATO countries, that have contributed to the development of conjugated polymeric materials. The program was focused on applications related to electrical conductivity and nonlinear optics. The attendance was well balanced with a blend of researchers from academic, industrial, and government labs, and including synthetic chemists, physical chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and theoreticians. The Workshop provided an especially timely opportunity to discuss the important progress that has taken place in the field of Conjugated Polymers in the late eighties as well as the enormous potential that lies in front of us. Among the recent significant developments in the field, we can cite for instance: (i) The discovery of novel synthetic routes affording conjugated polymers -that are much better characterized, especially through control of the molecular weight; - that can be processed from solution or the melt; the early promise that conducting polymcrs would constitute materials combining the electrical conductivities of metals with the mechanical properties of plastics is now being realized; -that can reach remarkably high conductivities.
