Electronic Structure, Dynamics, and Quantum Structural Properties of Condensed Matter

Electronic Structure, Dynamics, and Quantum Structural Properties of Condensed Matter PDF Author: Jozef T. Devreese
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475708998
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 591

Book Description
The 1984 Advanced Study Institute on "Electronic Structure, Dynamics and Quantum Structural Properties of Condensed Matter" took place at the Corsendonk Conference Center, close to the City of Antwerpen, from July 16 till 27, 1984. This NATO Advanced Study Institute was motivated by the research in my Institute, where, in 1971, a project was started on "ab-initio" phonon calculations in Silicon. I~ is my pleasure to thank several instances and people who made this ASI possible. First of all, the sponsor of the Institute, the NATO Scientific Committee. Next, the co-sponsors: Agfa-Gevaert, Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. N.V., C & A, Esso Belgium·, CDC Belgium, Janssens Pharmaceutica, Kredietbank and the Scientific Office of the U.S. Army. Special thanks are due to Dr. P. Van Camp and Drs. H. Nachtegaele, who, over several months, prepared the practical aspects of the ASI with the secretarial help of Mrs. R.-M. Vandekerkhof. I also like to. thank Mrs. M. Cuyvers who prepared and organized the subject and material index and Mrs. H. Evans for typing-assist ance. I express particular gratitude to Mrs. F. Nedee, who, like in 1981 and 1982, has put the magnificent Corsendonk Conference Center at our disposal and to Mr. D. Van Der Brempt, Director of the Corsendonk Conference Center, for the efficient way in which he and his staff took care of the practical organization at the Conference Center.

Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids

Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids PDF Author: Jenö Sólyom
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540853162
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 660

Book Description
The reader is holding the second volume of a three-volume textbook on sol- state physics. This book is the outgrowth of the courses I have taught for many years at Eötvös University, Budapest, for undergraduate and graduate students under the titles Solid-State Physics and Modern Solid-State Physics. The main motivation for the publication of my lecture notes as a book was that none of the truly numerous textbooks covered all those areas that I felt should be included in a multi-semester course. Especially, if the course strives to present solid-state physics in a uni?ed structure, and aims at d- cussing not only classic chapters of the subject matter but also (in more or less detail) problems that are of great interest for today’s researcher as well. Besides, the book presents a much larger material than what can be covered in a two- or three-semester course. In the ?rst part of the ?rst volume the analysis of crystal symmetries and structure goes into details that certainly cannot be included in a usual course on solid-state physics. The same applies, among others, to the discussion of the methods used in the determination of band structure, the properties of Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, and the theory of unconventional superconductors in the present and third volumes. These parts can be assigned as supplementary reading for interested students, or can be discussed in advanced courses.

Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids

Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids PDF Author: Jenö Sólyom
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540726004
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 697

Book Description
This book is the first of a three-volume series written by the same author. It aims to deliver a comprehensive and self-contained account of the fundamentals of the physics of solids. In the presentation of the properties and experimentally observed phenomena together with the basic concepts and theoretical methods, it goes far beyond most classic texts. The essential features of various experimental techniques are also explained. The text provides material for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses. It will also be a valuable reference for researchers in the field of condensed matter physics.

The Electronic Structures of Solids

The Electronic Structures of Solids PDF Author: B. R. Coles
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483280128
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 149

Book Description
The Electronic Structures of Solids aims to provide students of solid state physics with the essential concepts they will need in considering properties of solids that depend on their electronic structures and idea of the electronic character of particular materials and groups of materials. The book first discusses the electronic structure of atoms, including hydrogen atom and many-electron atom. The text also underscores bonding between atoms and electrons in metals. Discussions focus on bonding energies and structures in the solid elements, eigenstates of free-electron gas, and electrical conductivity. The manuscript reviews the presence of electrons in metals, as well as consequences of the periodic potential; Brillouin zones and the nearly-free-electron model; electronic structures of the metallic elements; and calculation of band structures. The text also ponders on metals, insulators, and semiconductors. Topics include full and empty bands, compound and doped semiconductors, optical properties of solids, and the dynamics of electron and holes. The book is a dependable reference for readers and students of solid state physics interested in the electronic structure of solids.

Ultrafast Dynamics Driven by Intense Light Pulses

Ultrafast Dynamics Driven by Intense Light Pulses PDF Author: Markus Kitzler
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319201735
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
This book documents the recent vivid developments in the research field of ultrashort intense light pulses for probing and controlling ultrafast dynamics. The recent fascinating results in studying and controlling ultrafast dynamics in ever more complicated systems such as (bio-)molecules and structures of meso- to macroscopic sizes on ever shorter time-scales are presented. The book is written by some of the most eminent experimental and theoretical experts in the field. It covers the new groundbreaking research directions that were opened by the availability of new light sources such as fully controlled intense laser fields with durations down to a single oscillation cycle, short-wavelength laser-driven attosecond pulses and intense X-ray pulses from the upcoming free electron lasers. These light sources allowed the investigation of dynamics in atoms, molecules, clusters, on surfaces and very recently also in nanostructures and solids in new regimes of parameters which, in turn, led to the identification of completely new dynamics and methods for controlling it. Example topics covered by this book include the study of ultrafast processes in large molecules using attosecond pulses, control of ultrafast electron dynamics in solids with shaped femtosecond laser pulses, light-driven ultrafast plasmonic processes on surfaces and in nanostructures as well as research on atomic and molecular systems under intense X-ray radiation. This book is equally helpful for people who would like to step into this field (e.g. young researchers), for whom it provides a broad introduction, as well as for already experienced researchers who may enjoy the exhaustive discussion that covers the research on essentially all currently studied objects and with all available ultrafast pulse sources.
