Book Description
The conventional ordinary and extraordinary modes in the electron cyclotron range of frequencies are not suitable for heating of and/or driving currents in spherical tori (ST) plasmas. However, electron Bernstein waves offer an attractive possibility for heating and current drive in this range of frequencies. In this paper, we summarize our theoretical and numerical results which describe the excitation and propagation of electron Bernstein waves in ST plasmas. Keywords: ECR heating; Electron Bernstein wave emission; Electron Bernstein wave heating; mode conversion; RF heating.

In this paper, we summarize our theoretical and numerical results which describe the excitation of electron Bernstein waves in ST plasmas when the extraordinary mode or the ordinary mode are coupled into the plasma from an external source. In our discussion on the conversion of the ordinary mode to electron Bernstein waves (via the slow extraordinary mode) we illustrate very important physics, relevant to this conversion process, that has been ignored in previous studies. The particular physics has to do with the conversion of the slow extraordinary mode to the fast extraordinary mode that can then propagate out of the plasma and thus reduce the mode conversion to electron Bernstein waves. This reduction in the mode conversion can occur even when the wave numbers are such that the ordinary mode cutoff and the slow extraordinary mode cutoff are coincident in space. Furthermore, we also consider the emission of electron Bernstein waves from a thermal plasma. This emission mode converts to extraordinary and ordinary modes in the vicinity of the upper hybrid resonance. We describe the general relationship between the conversion coefficients when exciting electron Bernstein waves using either the extraordinary mode or the ordinary mode, and the emission coefficients when thermally emitted electron Bernstein waves convert to the extraordinary and ordinary modes.

Electron Cyclotron Emission And Electron Cyclotron Heating (Ec12), Proceedings Of The 12th Joint Workshop

Electron Cyclotron Emission And Electron Cyclotron Heating (Ec12), Proceedings Of The 12th Joint Workshop PDF Author: Gerardo Giruzzi
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814487295
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 613

Book Description
The 12th Joint Workshop on Electron Cyclotron Emission and Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (EC-12) was held in Aix-en-Provence (France) from May 13 to 16, 2002. This workshop was concerned with the interaction of electromagnetic waves and hot plasmas, a subject of great importance in the framework of research on controlled thermonuclear fusion. Using as a fuel a mixture of deuterium and tritium, which can be extracted from sea water, this is a very promising way to develop an intrinsically safe reactor. The workshop gathered approximately one hundred specialists in the production, use and theory of millimetre waves for heating and diagnostics of fusion plasmas.

Radiofrequency Heating of Plasmas,

Radiofrequency Heating of Plasmas, PDF Author: R. A. Cairns
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
Cross and Manheimer/Lashmore-Davies sell steadily in the export market - potential for Cairns here. This book provides a concise introduction to the basic physics of radiofrequency heating. Most existing literature on the subject is at the research level, aimed at specialists in the field. It provides a survey of theoretical and experimental results with a large number of references to help the reader wishing for more detail. Provides a concise and readable account/ Basic physical principles are emphasised and more complicated mathematical ideas are explained in outline. Radiofrequency current drive is discussed in detail. "One criticsm may be lack of detail. I have deliberatly avoided including a lot of mathematical and experimental detail in order to keep the book short and to concentrate on the essential ideas. Enough references are given to lead anyone wishing more detail to the appropriate literature" - comment from the author? Export Market: Japan, USA, CERN, all important centres for fusion research Tokamaks - supercolliders for particle acceleration - particles are bombarded by extremely powerful lasers the beams of which are split many times through kms of piping - massive structurees largest currently in Japan but also important structure in US.
