Book Description
We report results of electron cyclotron heating (ECH) experiments in which 80-kW of microwave power from a 35-GHz gyrotron is injected into a tokamak with large single pass absorption. For 10-ms microwave pulses, incident from the high field side of the torus, the central electron temperature increases from 850 eV to 1250 eV, in agreement with empirical transport code calculations. For the first time in a tokamak, we demonstrate that electron temperature scales linearly with ECH power. (Author).

Preionization and Start-up in the ISX-B Tokamak Using Electron Cyclotron Heating at 28 GHz

Book Description
A 28-GHz gyrotron was used to produce a plasma at the electron cyclotron resonance in the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) tokamak. The influence of the toroidal magnetic field magnitude, error fields, gas pressure, microwave power, microwave pulse length, and microwave timing was studied for experiments with magnetic field and gas only. Also, experiments with preionization followed by capacitor discharges were carried out in which these quantities were varied, as were the capacitor bank voltages. Optimum conditions of preionization for some of the parameters were determined. A theoretical model that adequately reproduces the data is given. Calculations based on this model show the temporal evolution of the electron temperature and density, the neutral density, and the plasma current. The model adequately accounts for present and previous experimental results and can be used to make predictions for future experiments.

Second-cyclotron-harmonic Emission Measurements on ISX-B.

Second-cyclotron-harmonic Emission Measurements on ISX-B. PDF Author:

Book Description
Second harmonic cyclotron radiation was used to measure the electron temperature during electron cyclotron heating (ECH) on the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) tokamak. The 58-GHz and 70-GHz microwave superheterodyne receivers used for the measurements are described in detail. The limitations of the use of cyclotron radiation for a temperature measurement are quantified in terms of both the density and the temperature. A comparison is made between the results from the microwave diagnostics and those from the laser Thomson scattering to demonstrate that the cyclotron emission is thermal. A brief discussion of sensitivity to runaways and to other nonthermal populations is given.

Book Description
A series of electron cyclotron heating (ECH) experiments was performed with a 28-GHz gyrotron on the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) tokamak at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Up to 70 kW of microwave power was injected into ISX-B from the high field side. Bulk heating was observed with a central temperature rise of approx. 370 eV from an original temperature of approx. 600 eV, as measured by Thomson scattering. With ECH and under low density conditions, large nonthermal signals were observed on electron cyclotron emission diagnostics at the first, second, and third harmonics. These signals sometimes became quite large after the end of the ECH pulse. The effects observed can be attributed to relatively small changes in the electron distribution function. The temporal behavior of the enhanced emission is tentatively attributed to the pitch angle scattering of superthermal electrons.
