This is the final report on the laboratory investigation of electrolysis of carbonate leach solutions using the mercury cathode cell. Data are presented on the electrolysis of Anaconda pregnant solution, and a pregnant solution containing uranium only which was derived from laboratory leaching tests on Cal Uranium ore. High recoveries from both solutions were made with low power consumptions. A correlation of the rate data as a function of cathode current density and temperature which should be adequate for design of a pilot-plant facility is presented. An economic evaluation of the electrolysis using the mercury cathode cell is included. The estimates show quite a high initial investment but the operating costs appear to be favorable compared to other methods of recovery.

This report represents preliminary cost estimates on selected methods for the recovery of uranium and vanadium from carbonate leach solutions utilizing a mercury cathode cell. The conditions considered in this report are not necessarily the optimum but serve as a basis of compariosn. Operating costs for all of the processes considered are favorable in comparison to the method of acidifying the arbonate solution to recover the uranium and vanadium. The range of operating costs, plus plant amortization, reported are from $1.23 PTS to $4.79 PTS. The operating costs presented exclude labor and maintenance. Capital costs reported arerelatively high for the various processes, being in the range of from $1,700 to $5,500/ton solution/day, but these may be substantially reduced at a slight increase in operating costs.
