In this book, the word note acquires a whole new meaning, as it presents the annotations that Rafael Lucas Rodríguez Caballero, prominent Costa Rican biologist of international renown, made as he studied orchids over the course of several decades. He dissected a broad series of flowers under the microscope, analyzed the diversity of their forms, and presented the results in a technical fashion, with meticulous annotations. But he did this in the form of watercolors, so that examining his notes is to discover a fantastic work of art, in which the specimens acquire life and, often, a three-dimensional aspect. These plates highlight his naturalist's eye and artist's sensibility. Rafael Lucas died without finishing this project, and to date only a fraction of this work has been published. This book presents over 1000 of his unpublished watercolors, with their corresponding annotations. In them, there are data on the variation that occurs within and between species, which is relevant in biology. Also clear are his efforts to identify the plants he studied, an aspect of historical interest. And, after decades of attempts at publishing it, here is the spectacular art of a prodigious student of the fascinating forms of orchids.

Ak’abal writes about children, and grandfathers, and mothers, and animals, and ghosts, and thwarted love, and fields, and rains, and poetry, and poverty, and death. The poetry was written for adults but can also be read and loved by young people, especially in this collection, beautifully illustrated by award-winning Guatemalan-American illustrator Amelia Lau Carling. Make Ink

Make Ink PDF Author: Jason Logan
Publisher: Abrams
ISBN: 1683353277
Category : Crafts & Hobbies
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
“The pigments he concocts from these humble beginnings are as fun to make as they are eye-opening to work with . . . the world never quite looks the same.” —MarthaStewart.com A 2018 Best Book of the Year—The Guardian The Toronto Ink Company was founded in 2014 by designer and artist Jason Logan as a citizen science experiment to make eco-friendly, urban ink from street-harvested pigments. In Make Ink, Logan delves into the history of inkmaking and the science of distilling pigment from the natural world. Readers will learn how to forage for materials such as soot, rust, cigarette butts, peach pits, and black walnut, then how to mix, test, and transform these ingredients into rich, vibrant inks that are sensitive to both place and environment. Organized by color, and featuring lovely minimalist photography throughout, Make Ink combines science, art, and craft to instill the basics of ink making and demonstrate the beauty and necessity of engaging with one of mankind’s oldest tools of communication. “Logan demystifies the process, encouraging experimentation and taking a fresh look at urban environments.” —NPR “The book is full of inspiration and takes a lot of the mystery out of ink making, at least at its simplest level. And it also reminds me why I love ink—any ink or liquid color as much as I do.” —The Well-Appointed Desk “Quite a few recipes . . . that use color from the kitchen: carrots, black beans, blueberries, turmeric, and onion skins all make beautiful ink colors.” —Design Observer “Make Ink opens up about methods, providing an open source guide to DIY ink.” —CityLab
