The Spanish Welfare State in European Context

The Spanish Welfare State in European Context PDF Author: Ana Marta Guillén
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317014979
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
Following the death of Franco, Spain underwent a transition to democracy in the mid-1970s. Although a rapid process of modernization occurred, the Spanish welfare state was seen, until fairly recently, as relatively underdeveloped. However, given the progressive Europeanization and expansion of Spanish social policy, questions arise as to whether the Spanish welfare system should still be considered as peripheral to West European welfare states. This volume is divided into three sections. The first section deals with broad trends in the evolution of the Spanish welfare state. To begin with, the consolidation path of social protection policies is explored. Attention is also paid to the process of Europeanization. Furthermore, the analysis explores advances in gender equality policies. In the second section, attention is turned to governance issues, such as collective bargaining, the interplay among levels of government, the welfare mix and public support for social policies. The third and final part of the book addresses five main challenges facing the Spanish welfare state in the 21st century, namely, the need to enhance flexicurity; to achieve a better work-family balance; to coordinate immigration policies with existing social protection; to tackle the persistence of high rates of relative poverty; and to face intense population ageing, both in terms of increasing needs for care and the reform of the pension system.

Social Development and Social Work Perspectives on Social Protection

Social Development and Social Work Perspectives on Social Protection PDF Author: Julie L. Drolet
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317673468
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 311

Book Description
Social protection is now considered a development milestone and an important tool in combating poverty. Interventions can include, for example, health insurance, public works programs, guaranteed employment schemes, or cash transfers targeting vulnerable populations groups. This innovative volume is designed to develop understanding about the role and contribution of social protection globally and to share innovative practice and policies from around the world. It explores how to cover an entire population effectively, especially those who are at risk or who are already in a situation of deprivation, and in a sustainable manner. Divided into two parts, the book begins by exploring the theoretical underpinnings of social protection, discussing the social work and social development perspectives and concepts that currently shape it. The second part is comprised of case studies from countries implementing successful social protection initiatives, including Brazil, India, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Indonesia, and reveals how the impact of a successful social protection intervention on poverty, vulnerability and inequality can be dramatic. This volume is an important reference for advanced students and researchers from a range of disciplines including social policy, social work, development studies, geography, planning, economics, sociology, population health and political science.

Tuberculosis Then and Now

Tuberculosis Then and Now PDF Author: Flurin Condrau
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773536000
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
One-third of the world's population is currently infected with the TB bacillus and up to ten percent of these individuals will go on to develop tuberculosis. Today the disease is most prevalent in Africa and South Asia, but a century and a half ago it was the largest single cause of death in Europe and North America. In Tuberculosis Then and Now leading scholars and new researchers in the field reflect on the changing medical, social, and cultural understanding of the disease and engage in a wider debate about the role of narrative in the social history of medicine and how it informs current debates and issues surrounding the treatment of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. Through a case study of the history of tuberculosis and its treatment, this collection examines medicine and health care from the perspectives of class, race, and gender, providing a challenging and refreshing addition To The field of bacteria-centred accounts of the history of medicine. Contributors include Peter Atkins (University of Durham), David Barnes (University of Pennsylvania), Alison Bashford (Harvard and University of Sidney), Tim Boon (Science Museum, London), Linda Bryder (University of Auckland), Flurin Condrau (University of Manchester), Jorge Molero-Messa (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), Helen Valier (University of Houston), John Welshman (University of Lancaster), and Michael Worboys (University of Manchester).
