This paper studies growth patterns in Emerging Market Economies (EMs) from the perspective on clusters and taxonomies. First, it documents developments over the past five decades in EMs and uses a cluster analysis to better understand convergence and the investment-growth nexus. Second, it looks at the performance of EMs since 2000 and develops a taxonomy to classify countries according to their factor endowments as well as their real and financial external linkages. The taxonomy offers insights on growth dynamics pre and post the global financial crisis. Results highlight the high degree of heterogeneity in EMs and the need for more granular and targeted near and long-term policy advice.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has the potential to exacerbate food insecurity around the world as both countries are a major exporter of grains and other agricultural products. In this model based scenario study, medium-term effects of the war on agricultural production, trade flows, market prices, and food security are quantified. The scenarios focus on the possible consequences of macro-economic and agricultural production impacts in Ukraine, consequences of trade sanction measures against Russia, and related higher energy prices. From a food security perspective, we can conclude that there is enough food on the global level, but higher food prices could become a problem for a part of the population that has a low income and spends a large part of their food on cereals. For some countries highly dependent on imports of Ukrainian and Russian cereals like Egypt, Turkey and Middle East, food availability will come under some pressure. Food security impacts are very minor for the EU, as food availability is not a problem in the EU and in general people spend a small part on cereal-based food products.

The comparative method is fundamental and critical for political scientists, and especially those interested in comparative politics. Such questions as how democratic is the United States, how rich is Germany, and how ethnically complex is Nigeria-and what effects these attributes have on important political phenomena-cannot be analyzed except comparatively. To understand politics we need to think in terms of concepts, processes, behavior and authority patterns that transcend specific regions or nation-states. Comparative Analysis of Nations is designed to address three questions confronting the study of politics: (1) What do I do once I have identified a question that I want to explore within a cross-national perspective? (2) How do I proceed so I adequately address this question? (3) Why should I proceed with this particular study plan?
