Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians, Vol. 1 of 2 I have here and there introduced some remarks relating to the Greeks, thinking that a comparison of the habits and arts of other people, with those of the Egyptians, may be interesting; and the impulse now given to taste in England has induced me to add some observations on decorative art, as well as on colour, form, and proportion, so well understood in ancient times. And as many of the ideas now gaining ground in this country, regarding colour, adaptability of materials, the non-imitation of natural objects for ornamental purposes, and certain rules to be observed in decorative works, have long been advocated by me, and pro perly belong to the subject of Egypt, I think the Opportunity well suited for expressing my opinion upon them while I rejoice that public attention has been invited to take a proper view of the mode of improving taste. Book Description
Excerpt from Uarda, Vol. 1 of 2: A Romance of Ancient Egypt IN the winter of 1873 I spent some weeks in one of the tombs of the Necropolis of Thebes in order to study the monuments of that solemn city of the dead; and during my long rides in the silent desert the germ was developed whence this book has since grown. The leisure of mind and body required to write it was given me through a long but not disabling illness. In the first instance I intended to. Elucidate this story - like my Egyptian Princess - with numerous and extensive notes placed at the end; but I was led to give up this plan from finding that it would lead me to the repetition of much that I had written in the notes to that earlier work. The numerous notes to the former novel had a threefold purpose. In the first place they served to explain the text; in the second they were a guarantee of the care with which I had striven to depict the archaeological details in all their individuality from the records of the monuments and of Classic Authors; and thirdly I hoped to supply the reader who desired further knowledge of the period with some guide to his studies. Rameses, an Egyptian Tale, Vol. 1 of 3 PDF Author: Edward Upham

Book Description
Excerpt from Rameses, an Egyptian Tale, Vol. 1 of 3: With Historical Notes of the Era of the Pharaohs The characters of the youths were as different as their persons; and in uential as they became upon the destinies of their country, no less than on their own changeful and checkered course, may require some touches to develope; while the main springs will be traced more usefully, as they are drawn into operation, in their actions and future conduct. San bacon, the eldest, had passed the bounds of youth, and sighed to encounter the responsibility and reali ties of life. Born to the most elevated honours, secured also by the invariable laws and constitution 3 of the kingdom of the rank possessed by his ances tors, he saw the sphere of command and power ready for his occupancy; in exible and energetic, he could control the wavering and overawe the timid, while ardent and intrepid, he had the natural materials of the warrior and conqueror. His frame was of an iron mould, above the common stature, and athletic for an Egyptian: a forehead wide and bold, a countenance austere and highly majestic.
