Book Description
The results of an analytic and experimental investigation to identify and determine the influence of effects of structural heating on the dynamic response characteristics of randomly excited aerospace structures and on the combined environment-acoustic fatigue properties of structural components are presented. Thermal and thermal-acoustic tests were conducted on 2024-T81, Ti-6Al-4V and Rene' 41 nickel-base alloy panel specimens. Effects of the temperature increase and sound pressure on the stress response and oil canning of the panels were observed. A semiempirical criterion for predicting oil canning of panels in thermal-acoustic environments was developed. Shaker tests were conducted on 2024-T81 aluminum alloy specimens to determine the effect of the different sequences and combinations of heating and shaker excitation on the fatigue life of the specimens when oil canning is a factor. Elevated temperature fatigue tests under steady-state random (shaker) excitation were also conducted with Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and Rene' 41 nickel-base alloy specimens.

Sonic Fatigue Test Methods at Elevated Temperatures

Sonic Fatigue Test Methods at Elevated Temperatures PDF Author: M. H. Hieken

Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
Sonic fatigue testing at elevated temperatures has become increasingly important as aerospace vehicle structures are designed for the combined environments. Work is described in four areas related to thermal/ acoustic testing: acoustic simulation, thermal simulation, specimen mounting effects, and instrumentation and measurements. Acoustic field studies considered the directional properties of various fields, as well as coupling of the acoustic fields with structural specimens. Thermal environment studies dealt with predicting temperatures in a heated structural specimen. The design of heating systems was also discussed. In specimen mounting effects, equations were presented to show how thermal loads enter into the general dynamic equations. Panels with free edges and panels with fixed edges were treated in detail. Measurement methods related to sonic fatigue testing at elevated temperatures were surveyed for availability of devices which operate in the combined environment.

Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures

Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures PDF Author: Sook-Ying Ho
Publisher: Bentham Science Publishers
ISBN: 1608050246
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission requirements and the use of non-traditional materials, such as non-metallic composites, in their construction. Prediction of the complex loading environment seen in high-speed operation and constitutive / fracture models which can adequately describe the non-linear behaviour exhibited by advanced alloys and composite materials are critical in analyzing the non-linear structural response of modern aerospace vehicles and structures. The state-of-the-art of the different structural integrity assessment and prediction methodologies (including non-destructive structural health monitoring techniques) used for the structural design, service life assessment and failure analysis of the different types of aerospace vehicles are presented. The chapters are written by experts from aerospace / defence research organizations and academia in the fields of solid mechanics, and structural mechanics and dynamics of aircraft, rocket and hypersonic systems. The book will serve as a useful reference document containing specialist knowledge on appropriate prediction methodologies for a given circumstance and experimental data acquired from multi-national collaborative programs.
