The Relation of Race/ethnic-matching to the Engagement, Retention, and Treatment Outcomes of Adolescent Substance Users

The Relation of Race/ethnic-matching to the Engagement, Retention, and Treatment Outcomes of Adolescent Substance Users PDF Author: Jerren C. Weekes

Pages : 43

Book Description
This study examined the relation of race/ethnic-matching (i.e., matching therapist and client based on self-reported race/ethnicity [REM]) to the treatment outcomes of 471 Hispanic, African American, and White adolescents in substance abuse treatment. Additionally, exploratory analyses were conducted to examine family functioning as a moderator variable between racial/ethnic match and treatment outcomes. Logistic and multiple regression analyses revealed that REM, alone, did not significantly predict the treatment outcomes of the African American and White adolescents. However, REM predicted an increase in the externalizing behaviors (e.g., non-compliance, aggression, hyperactivity) and substance use of Hispanic adolescents 12 months post baseline assessment. Family functioning moderated the relationship between REM and treatment engagement for African American adolescents. As family functioning worsened, African American adolescents who were matched had a higher likelihood of treatment engagement. Implications for substance abuse treatment with ethnic minority adolescents and future race/ethnic-matching research are provided.

Exploring the Moderating Role of Ethnic Identity in the Relation Between Adolescent Stress and Life Satisfaction

Exploring the Moderating Role of Ethnic Identity in the Relation Between Adolescent Stress and Life Satisfaction PDF Author: Allyson Topps

Book Description
Research in the field of positive psychology has expanded knowledge about factors that contribute to well-being. Less attention has focused on the role of ethnic identity in youths reactions to environmental factors and perceived life experiences. This study examined the potential protective effect of ethnic identity in the relation between adolescents normative social stressors (family and peer) and a minority stressor (perceived discrimination) and life satisfaction. Data was collected via self-report measures from 417 adolescents (age range 14 to 18, 63.0% girls) at a public high school in the mid-south region of the United States. Moderation analyses were conducted in the PROCESS macro for SPSS to test three types of moderation models: single moderator, multiple moderator, and moderated moderation. Ethnic identity was the moderator in all models. Ethnicity was added as a second moderator in the last two models. Results showed that ethnic identity and ethnicity moderated the relation between peer stress and life satisfaction in one multiple moderator model. Conditional effect analyses revealed that the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction was significant and decreased across low, moderate, and high levels of ethnic identity for African Americans. For European Americans, the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction was significant and decreased at low and moderate levels of ethnic identity only. No significant moderation effects were found in the models with family stress and stress from perceived discrimination as predictors. The findings suggested that the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction differs between African American and European American adolescents, and ethnic identity demonstrates a protective effect in the context of peer stress for both African American and European American adolescents. Implications and future directions are discussed..

Immigrant Stories

Immigrant Stories PDF Author: Cynthia Garcia Coll

Book Description
Immigrant Stories portrays the contexts and academic trajectories of development of three unique immigrant groups: Cambodian, Dominican and Portuguese. The children of immigrant families - or second generation youth - are the fastest growing population of school children in the US. However, very little is known about these children's academic and psychological development during middle childhood. We examine the previously under-explored intricacies of children's emerging cultural attitudes and identities, academic engagement, and academic achievement. These processes are studied alongside a myriad of factors in the family and school environment that combine to shape children's academic psychological functioning during this important period. Through a three-year longitudinal study, including interviews with teachers, parents and children, this book presents a fascinating look at the community, school, and family contexts of child development among second-generation children. Both pre-immigration and post-immigration characteristics are explored as critical factors for understanding children of immigrants' development. In the current climate of US immigration policy debate, we offer research findings that may inform educators and administrators about the sources of community strengths and challenges facing our newest immigrant generations.
