The statistics are appalling. Between 8% and 10% of U.S. high school students carry guns to school every day. In a typical mid-size city, 30 to 50 cases of school violence are reported daily, and half of these cases involve guns. School Violence: Assessment, Treatment, Prevention shows us the reality behind the statistics. This study examined how community violence exposure has influenced the motivation of high school students living in an urban Midwest low income, high crime community to attend college. Of the forty-one students who were given the questionnaire, only 36 students completed and submitted it. Of the 36 students who completed the survey, 35 were invited to participate in focus groups, as only one student stated that he/she had neither experienced any traumatic events nor witnessed community violence. A total of 12 students, mostly seniors, submitted signed permission slips and agreed to participate in the focus groups. Of the 12 participants, 100% reported having witnessed or experienced community violence. Two focus interview sessions were conducted with student participants who were currently enrolled in high school. The emphasis of the focus groups was on participants' experiences and how they related to the tenets of the Trauma Theory, as well as any factors that influenced student motivation to attend college. Three themes emerged and were derived from the findings: motivation, resilience, and support. This present study underscored the significance of finding and maintaining positive and supportive relationships, especially after exposure to trauma.
