Book Description
For many couples, marriage begins as a source of happiness and fulfillment, but gradually it becomes a source of frustration and despair. Subsequently, they fail to experience optimal level of marital relationship functioning. Positive psychology, a thriving branch of psychology, promotes positive constructs and strategies to enrich the level of well-being of people. In this background, the purpose of this study was to come up with an Integrative-Positive Marital Program (IPMP) for couples and to determine its effectiveness in enriching their marital relationship. The researcher utilized the true experimental research method, specifically between subjects: two independent group design, administering pre-tests and post-tests. This design determines if there were significant differences in the subjects' level of marital relationship before and after the administration of the intervention program. The study used Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and eight factors of the Marital Satisfaction Inventory, Revised (MSI-R) in measuring the level of marital relationship. A total of 30 selected couples from Caloocan, Metro Manila were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The experimental group was given eight weeks long intervention program, IPMP which was mainly anchored on two positive constructs, gratitude and forgiveness. The data analysis was done using mean scores, paired samples statistics, t-test for independent samples and Cohen's d. The statistical analysis between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group showed significant difference and its post-test mean scores indicated siginificant increase in the quality of marital relationship. hence, the study suggests that the Integrative-Positive Marital program (IPMP) was effective in the enrichment of the marital relationship.

Taking in the Good Based Bibliotherapy

Taking in the Good Based Bibliotherapy PDF Author: Dr. John Jacob
Publisher: Partridge Publishing
ISBN: 148288917X

Pages : 153

Book Description
Human life is a combination of positive and negative experiences. Although there is an infinite number of positive experiences in life, people are prone to take in negative ones in their daily lives. When people become depressed, there is a swing in their brain states and the patterns that direct attention, thinking, and behavior in specific ways, mainly with regard to losses and threats. Memories of earlier losses and threats are activated. Attention and focusing on positive events become difficult. Focusing on negative events, including the autobiographical memory, becomes easy. Moreover, depressed people markedly seek and take in negative experiences due to their negative life experiences, events, and dysfunctional cognitive appraisals. Psychological intervention is one of the most commonly sought forms of help when the female adolescents experience depression. As the world of the adolescents alters radically, mental health professionals must be equipped with proficient strategy to address the various aspects of depression. Since the theory on taking in the good proposes a new therapy approach with effective positive neuroplasticity strategy as important ingredients, it is to be expected that a combined intervention program based on this theory and principles of bibliotherapy would be dexterous enough to address depression in all its heterogeneous nature.

Cultural Sociology of Divorce

Cultural Sociology of Divorce PDF Author: Robert E. Emery
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 1412999588
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 1625

Book Description
While the formal definition of divorce may be concise and straightforward (legal termination of a marital union, dissolving bonds of matrimony between parties), the effects are anything but, particularly when children are involved. The Americans for Divorce Reform estimates that "40 or possibly even 50 percent of marriages will end in divorce if current trends continue." Outside the U.S., divorce rates have markedly increased across developed countries. Divorce and its effects are a significant social factor in our culture and others. It might be said that a whole "divorce industry" has been constructed, with divorce lawyers and mediators, family counselors, support groups, etc. As King Henry VIII's divorces showed, divorce has not always been easy or accepted. In some countries, divorce is not permitted and even in Europe, countries such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, and the Republic of Ireland legalized divorce only in the latter quarter of the 20th century. This multi-disciplinary encyclopedia covers curricular subjects related to divorce as examined by disciplines ranging from marriage and the family to anthropology, social and legal history, developmental and clinical psychology, and religion, all through a lens of cultural sociology. Features: 550 signed entries, A-to-Z, fill 3 volumes (1,500 pages) in print and electronic formats, offering the most detailed reference work available on issues related to divorce, both in the U.S. and globally. Cross-References and Further Readings guide readers to additional resources. A Chronology provides students with context via a historical perspective of divorce. In the electronic version, the comprehensive Index combines with Cross-References and thematic Reader's Guide themes to provide convenient search-and-browse capabilities. For state and nation entries, uniform entry structure combined with an abundance of statistics facilitates comparison between and across states and nations. Appendices provide further annotated sources of data and statistics.

A Triangular Theory of Love Based Integrative Intervention Program

A Triangular Theory of Love Based Integrative Intervention Program PDF Author: Kurian Devasia Alamkulam

Book Description
No one enters marriage in order to lead a distressed life. Nevertheless, modern era is stigmatized by marital distress and family degeneration, causing or/and exacerbating psychological as well as physical illness not only of the distressed couples, but also of their children and other family members. Partner relationship problem has become a botheration for mental health practitioners and pastoral counselors, and is one among the major reasons why people seek professional help. Hence, the purpose of this study was to come up with a Triangular Theory of Love Based Integrative Intervention Program for couples and to determine its effectiveness in reducing marital distress. The researcher utilized the true experimental research method, specifically between subjects: two independent groups (measures) design, administering pre-, post- and delayed posttests. This design determines if there were significant differences in the subjects level of marital distress before, after and three weeks after the administration of the intervention program. The study used eight factors of the standardized test Marital Satisfaction Inventory, Revised (MSI-R) in measuring the level of marital distress. 36 purposively selected couples from two distinct places of the south Indian state of Kerala participated in this study. The pretest mean scores and the independent sample t-test results revealed that the participants level of marital distress was high on most of the factors of MSI-R and that both groups were homogenous prior to the administration of the intervention program. The results also showed that there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the experimental group who received treatment, and its posttest and delayed posttest mean scores indicated that the marital distress level shrank to moderate from high. Comparison of the posttest and delayed posttest results of the experimental group showed no significant difference in five factors, but significant reduction was observed in three factors. This would mean that the reduction of marital distress of the subjects in the experimental group was sustained even three weeks after the administration of the program and was further reduced after the administration of the posttest. Hence, the study suggests that the triangular theory of love based integrative interventon program was effective in reducing marital distress and enhancing marital satisfaction.

Marriage Enrichment

Book Description
This dissertation reports the design, implementation and evaluation of a church-based marriage enrichment program. The program is based on the cognitive/behavioral tradition providing insight and skills needed to change thinking and behavior. This approach not only enables married couples to learn effective ways of developing a more stable and satisfying relationship, but also provides a structure in which the learned skills can be put into practice. 12 couples participated in this 8-week program. They completed the following 7 components: 1) attendance and participation in the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program Approach seminar; 2) reading 2 marriage enrichment books; 3) Bible-based devotional reading and prayer twice weekly; 4) a date night every other week; 5) weekly meetings; 6) a weekend retreat; and 7) attendance and participation in a "Celebration of Commitment" ceremony. The ENRICH Marital Inventory was given as a pre- and post-test. It was used to measure the effectiveness of the program along with verbal and written reporting by the couples. The hypothesis validated by the research for all 12 couples is: Having completed the marriage enrichment program, couples will report greater marital stability and satisfaction.
