Quantum Phase Transitions in Cold Atoms and Low Temperature Solids

Quantum Phase Transitions in Cold Atoms and Low Temperature Solids PDF Author: Kaden Richard Alan Hazzard
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441981799
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
The primary focus of this thesis is to theoretically describe nanokelvin experiments in cold atomic gases, which offer the potential to revolutionize our understanding of strongly correlated many-body systems. The thesis attacks major challenges of the field: it proposes and analyzes experimental protocols to create new and interesting states of matter and introduces theoretical techniques to describe probes of these states. The phenomena considered include the fractional quantum Hall effect, spectroscopy of strongly correlated states, and quantum criticality, among others. The thesis also clarifies experiments on disordered quantum solids, which display a variety of exotic phenomena and are candidates to exhibit so-called "supersolidity." It collects experimental results and constrains their interpretation through theoretical considerations. This Doctoral Thesis has been accepted by Cornell University, Ithaca, USA.

Quantum Theory

Quantum Theory PDF Author: Mihai V. Putz
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1466558865
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Quantum Theory: Density, Condensation, and Bonding presents in a unitary manner the main actual theories of matter, mainly the density function theory (DFT) for fermions, the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) for bosons, and chemical bonding as a special realization of the first two so-called mixed fermionic-bosonic states. The book covers the moder

Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices

Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices PDF Author: Maciej Lewenstein
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199573123
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 494

Book Description
This book explores the physics of atoms frozen to ultralow temperatures and trapped in periodic light structures. It introduces the reader to the spectacular progress achieved on the field of ultracold gases and describes present and future challenges in condensed matter physics, high energy physics, and quantum computation.

Low Dimensional Properties Of Solids: Nobel Jubilee Symposium - Proceedings Of The Nobel Jubilee Symposium

Low Dimensional Properties Of Solids: Nobel Jubilee Symposium - Proceedings Of The Nobel Jubilee Symposium PDF Author: T Claeson
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814553751
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Rarely do so many leading physicists attend one symposium. No less than nine Nobel laureates and some 40 other top researchers gathered for this symposium and this book contains the material presented in invited talks as well as the posters. The 34 papers are organised into three groups corresponding to various aspects of low dimensional physics of solids.

Quantum Many-Body Physics of Ultracold Molecules in Optical Lattices

Quantum Many-Body Physics of Ultracold Molecules in Optical Lattices PDF Author: Michael L. Wall
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319142526
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 391

Book Description
This thesis investigates ultracold molecules as a resource for novel quantum many-body physics, in particular by utilizing their rich internal structure and strong, long-range dipole-dipole interactions. In addition, numerical methods based on matrix product states are analyzed in detail, and general algorithms for investigating the static and dynamic properties of essentially arbitrary one-dimensional quantum many-body systems are put forth. Finally, this thesis covers open-source implementations of matrix product state algorithms, as well as educational material designed to aid in the use of understanding such methods.

Quantum Phase Transitions

Quantum Phase Transitions PDF Author: Subir Sachdev
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 113950021X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 521

Book Description
Describing the physical properties of quantum materials near critical points with long-range many-body quantum entanglement, this book introduces readers to the basic theory of quantum phases, their phase transitions and their observable properties. This second edition begins with a new section suitable for an introductory course on quantum phase transitions, assuming no prior knowledge of quantum field theory. It also contains several new chapters to cover important recent advances, such as the Fermi gas near unitarity, Dirac fermions, Fermi liquids and their phase transitions, quantum magnetism, and solvable models obtained from string theory. After introducing the basic theory, it moves on to a detailed description of the canonical quantum-critical phase diagram at non-zero temperatures. Finally, a variety of more complex models are explored. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics and particle and string theory.

Understanding Quantum Phase Transitions

Understanding Quantum Phase Transitions PDF Author: Lincoln Carr
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439802610
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 754

Book Description
Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) offer wonderful examples of the radical macroscopic effects inherent in quantum physics: phase changes between different forms of matter driven by quantum rather than thermal fluctuations, typically at very low temperatures. QPTs provide new insight into outstanding problems such as high-temperature superconductivit
