Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits with Promise

Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits with Promise PDF Author: Simón E. Malo
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Durian
Languages : en
Pages : 20

Book Description
The durian, Durio zibethinus Murray, is the most controversial fruit of the Tropics because of its strong, offensive odor and its rich, filling taste. It is a fruit tree of the tropical rain forests of the Malaysian Archipelago and adjoining areas and is popular in many parts of Southeast Asia. The fruit is a large, spiny capsule that opens into five segments containing seeds covered with a pulpy, edible aril. The durian is highly prized both as a fresh fruit and as processed dishes and sweet preserves. The plant is cultivated only where the rainy season is long and well distributed without a marked dry season. Seed viability is short, and superior cultivars have to be propagated by grafting. The tree needs at least 12- by 12-m spacing and a well-drained soil that should be maintained constantly moist. Grafted trees produce in as little as 4 years, but seedling may take as long as 10. When mature, the fruit drops to the ground, but it can be carefully harvested before this occurs and ripened in 4 to 6 days. The durian is an exceptionally nutritious fruit with a high protein, carbohydrate, and vitamin content. It merits large-scale trials in the Tropics of the Western Hemisphere, where it is known to be well adapted to many humid localities.

Recent Advances in Flowering Time Control

Recent Advances in Flowering Time Control PDF Author: Christian Jung

Book Description
The onset of flowering is an important step during the lifetime of a flowering plant. During the past two decades, there has been enormous progress in our understanding of how internal and external (environmental) cues control the transition to reproductive growth in plants. Many flowering time regulators have been identified from the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Most of them are assembled in regulatory pathways, which converge to central integrators which trigger the transition of the vegetative into an inflorescence meristem. For crop cultivation, the time of flowering is of upmost importance, because it determines yield. Phenotypic variation for this trait is largely controlled by genes, which were often modified during domestication or crop improvement. Understanding the genetic basis of flowering time regulation offers new opportunities for selection in plant breeding and for genome editing and genetic modification of crop species.

Root Distribution of Durian (Durio Zibethinus Murr.) Grown in Different Environmental Conditions

Root Distribution of Durian (Durio Zibethinus Murr.) Grown in Different Environmental Conditions PDF Author: M. Masri
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Durio
Languages : en
Pages : 6

Book Description
Root length density (RLD) distributions of budded D24 durian clone grown in different environmental conditions were studied. Root densities declined both horizontally towards the edge of the canopy and vertically with soil depths. Relatively about 34-49% of total RLD were found within the first quarter of the canopy radius while 20-30% were located in the second and third quarter. Only less than 15% of total RLD were found in the last quarter of the canopy radius. Vertically, about 72-87% of RLD were located in the top 45 cm from the soil surface with about 31-42% were on the top first 15 cm. Penetration of roots were small beyond the 75 cm soil depth. This study showed that RLD distribution of budded D24 durian clone were dependent on the environment and results also showed that the pattern did conform to some general pattern of distribution.

Pollinators and Pollination

Pollinators and Pollination PDF Author: Jeff Ollerton
Publisher: Pelagic Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1784272299
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
A unique and personal insight into the ecology and evolution of pollinators, their relationships with flowers, and their conservation in a rapidly changing world. The pollination of flowers by insects, birds and other animals is a fundamentally important ecological function that supports both the natural world and human society. Without pollinators to facilitate the sexual reproduction of plants, the world would be a biologically poorer place in which to live, there would be an impact on food security, and human health would suffer. Written by one of the world’s leading pollination ecologists, this book provides an introduction to what pollinators are, how their interactions with flowers have evolved, and the fundamental ecology of these relationships. It explores the pollination of wild and agricultural plants in a variety of habitats and contexts, including urban, rural and agricultural environments. The author also provides practical advice on how individuals and organisations can study, and support, pollinators. As well as covering the natural history of pollinators and flowers, the author discusses their cultural importance, and the ways in which pollinator conservation has been portrayed from a political perspective. The book draws on field work experiences in South America, Africa, Australia, the Canary Islands and the UK. For over 30 years the author has spent his career researching how plants and pollinators evolve relationships, how these interactions function ecologically, their importance for society, and how we can conserve them in a rapidly changing world. This book offers a unique and personal insight into the science of pollinators and pollination, aimed at anyone who is interested in understanding these fascinating and crucial ecological interactions.
