Book Description
We compute the corrections from two-photon and \gamma-Z exchange in parity-violating elastic electron--proton scattering, used to extract the strange form factors of the proton. We use a hadronic formalism that successfully reconciled the earlier discrepancy in the proton's electron to magnetic form factor ratio, suitably extended to the weak sector. Implementing realistic electroweak form factors, we find effects of the order 2-3% at Q^2

Book Description
We present a comprehensive study of two-boson exchange (TBE) corrections in parity-violating electron-proton elastic scattering. Within a hadronic framework, we compute contributions from box (and crossed box) diagrams in which the intermediate states are described by nucleons and Delta baryons. The Delta contribution is found to be much smaller than the nucleon one at backward angles (small epsilon), but becomes dominant in the forward scattering limit (epsilon near 1), where the nucleon contribution vanishes. The dependence of the corrections on the input hadronic form factors is small for Q^2

Book Description
Higher-order QED effects play an important role in precision measurements of nucleon elastic form factors in electron scattering. Here we introduce a two-photon exchange QED correction to the parity-violating polarization asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering. We calculate this correction in the parton model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions, and demonstrate that it can reach several per cent in certain kinematics, becoming comparable in size with existing experimental measurements of strange-quark effects in the proton neutral weak current.

Parity Violation In Electron Scattering - Proceedings Of The Workshop

Parity Violation In Electron Scattering - Proceedings Of The Workshop PDF Author: E J Beise
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814611506

Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
These proceedings cover the recent progress and future directions of parity violation in electron scattering. Both experimental and theoretical issues are discussed, such as those of hadronic structure, radiative corrections, and tests of the standard model. There are three sessions, the first of which serves as a general overview of theory and experiment. The second session deals with the technical aspects of making a measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in electron scattering, including not only detector design but polarized electron beams and beam polarimeters.. The remaining session covers the corrections to lowest order parity violating cross sections.

Parity Violation In Atoms And In Polarized Electron Scattering

Parity Violation In Atoms And In Polarized Electron Scattering PDF Author: Marie-anne Bouchiat

Book Description
In the last few years there has been considerable progress in improving the accuracy of parity violation experiments in electron scattering at high energy and in atomic physics. Recent results are a challenge to the standard electroweak theory and our understanding of hadron structure. This book is an extensive review of the advances in this field. The theoretical framework is presented at a pedagogical level, experiments and future projects are reviewed, and the results and their interpretation are discussed in depth.

Book Description
We review the role of two-photon exchange (TPE) in electron-hadron scattering, focusing in particular on hadronic frameworks suitable for describing the low and moderate Q^2 region relevant to most experimental studies. We discuss the effects of TPE on the extraction of nucleon form factors and their role in the resolution of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio puzzle. The implications of TPE on various other observables, including neutron form factors, electroproduction of resonances and pions, and nuclear form factors, are summarized. Measurements seeking to directly identify TPE effects, such as through the angular dependence of polarization measurements, nonlinear epsilon contributions to the cross sections, and via e+p to e-p cross section ratios, are also outlined. In the weak sector, we describe the role of TPE and gamma-Z interference in parity-violating electron scattering, and assess their impact on the extraction of the strange form factors of the nucleon and the weak charge of the proton.

Testing the Standard Model

Testing the Standard Model PDF Author: Christophe Match

Book Description
Fundamental interactions between electrons and protons, coupling between photons and Z bosons, and the underlying substructure of the proton, can all be probed through scattering experiments designed to measure the parity-violating asymmetry due to a mixing of electromagnetic and weak forces. Our research involves testing the limits of the standard model in search of new physics, by comparing high precision theoretical predictions of this asymmetry, along with the proton's weak charge and the weak mixing angle, to recent experimental measurements. We were ultimately able to achieve results consistent with experimental observations, by accounting for radiative corrections beyond single boson exchange. Our calculations include up to first-order Feynman diagrams containing 1 loop integrals, soft-photon bremsstrahlung, and we account for additional box diagram corrections. We also consider the addition of a new weakly-interacting dark Z boson (Z') to the Standard Model, and investigate how it affects the calculated asymmetry.

Book Description
Experiments on parity violation in electron scattering measure the asymmetry A = [sigma][sub R] - [sigma][sub L]/[sigma][sub R] + [sigma][sub L] where [sigma][sub R(L)] is the cross section for Right(Left) handed longitudinally polarized electrons. This asymmetry arises, in first order, from the interference between photon and Z-boson exchange amplitudes. Experiments make two basic uses of the Z-boson as a probe in electron-quark or electron-nucleon scattering. Historically the first usage was to test the electroweak theory in regions of kinematics where the hadronic structure is sufficiently understood. They discuss the application of higher energies at Jefferson Lab to repeat the SLAC e-D deep inelastic parity violation experiment [1] at a level of precision [approx] 0.5% in sin[sup 2][theta][sub W] which would be a useful constrain on extensions of the Standard Model [2]. The second, more recent usage of the Z-boson probe is to assume the Standard Model is correct at about the 1% level and use this as a unique method to address fundamental issues of nucleon structure, such as: (1) are the strange quarks an important component of the nucleon [3]; (2) In deep inelastic scattering, are the high momentum quarks u or d quarks? To address the first question, they discuss the feasibility of extending the HAPPEX experiment to higher Q[sup 2]. For the second question, they discuss a possible measurement of the ratio of valence quarks d/u in the proton using deep inelastic parity violation.

A Measurement of the Two-photon Exchange Effect in Elastic Electron-proton Scattering with OLYMPUS

A Measurement of the Two-photon Exchange Effect in Elastic Electron-proton Scattering with OLYMPUS PDF Author: Rebecca Lynn Russell

Book Description
Elastic electron-proton scattering has long been the tool of choice for the study of the proton form factors, GE(Q 2 ) and GM(Q2 ), which describe the electric and magnetic distributions of the proton as a function of momentum transfer. Recent experiments, measuring the form factors from polarization observables in polarized elastic electron-proton scattering, have found values of the ratio GE(Q2 )/GM(Q2) at high Q2 that contradict the results from unpolarized measurements. A proposed explanation for this discrepancy is the unaccounted two-photon exchange radiative correction, which could affect the unpolarized measurements. As this effect is currently not possible to calculate in a model-independent way, the OLYMPUS experiment was designed to make a direct measurement of it by measuring the elastic positron-proton to electron-proton scattering cross section ratio. The experiment was run in 2012 at DESY using the BLAST spectrometer and the DORIS positron and electron beams at 2 GeV incident on a gaseous hydrogen target. To analyze the data, a careful reconstruction of the scattering events, detailed simulation of the experimental setup, and full radiative corrections to the measured cross sections were performed. Preliminary results for the experiment show a statistically significant two-photon exchange effect, increasing over the measurement range of 0.6 GeV2
