Book Description
The effects of various thermo-mechanical treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 52100 steel have been investigated using a combination of optical and transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with standard mechanical testing. The response of the as-treated material to various hardening and tempering treatments has been determined and compared to that of material processed using a standard commercial technique. The results indicate that the thermo-mechanical treatments examined refine the microstructure and increase the tensile strength of AISI 52100 steel. Using these treatments allows processing of the steel to be accomplished at lower austenitizing temperatures and in shorter times than in currently utilized techniques. Additionally, the degradation of mechanical properties by time at various tempering temperatures is reduced. (Author).

The Effect of Grain and Carbine Refinement on the Isothermal Transformation Characteristics of AISI 52100 Steel

Book Description
A study of the microstructure and mechanical properties of isothermally-transformed AISI 52100 bearing steel was conducted. Standard spheroidized annealed and thermomechanically grain-refined materials were compared. Heat treatment consisted of austenitization at 850 C, followed by isothermal transformation at 350 C, 275 C or 250 C. Hardness, retained austenite, and optical and transmission electron microscopy data were obtained as a function of isothermal transformation time. Tensile test results also were obtained on selected conditions. It was found that isothermal holding above M sub s resulted in comparable hardness values for both materials. Retained austenite remained low for all cases but did tend to increase as the M sub s was approached. Microstructural analysis revealed that the fine-grain structure of the refined material was retained throughout the transformations while little or no difference in the carbide structure was noted. Tensile results show that the refined and transformed material exhibits greater strength and ductility. (Author).

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade Shafer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461337003
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Phase Transformations in Steels

Phase Transformations in Steels PDF Author: Elena Pereloma
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0857096109
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 657

Book Description
The processing-microstructure-property relationships in steels continue to present challenges to researchers because of the complexity of phase transformation reactions and the wide spectrum of microstructures and properties achievable. This major two-volume work summarises the current state of research on phase transformations in steels and its implications for the emergence of new steels with enhanced engineering properties.Volume 1 reviews fundamentals and diffusion-controlled phase transformations. After a historical overview, chapters in part one discuss fundamental principles of thermodynamics, diffusion and kinetics as well as phase boundary interfaces. Chapters in part two go on to consider ferrite formation, proeutectoid ferrite and cementite transformations, pearlite formation and massive austenite-ferrite phase transformations. Part three discusses the mechanisms of bainite transformations, including carbide-containing and carbide-free bainite. The final part of the book considers additional driving forces for transformation including nucleation and growth during austenite-to-ferrite phase transformations, dynamic strain-induced ferrite transformations (DIST) as well as the effects of magnetic fields and heating rates. With its distinguished editors and distinguished international team of contributors, the two volumes of Phase transformations in steels is a standard reference for all those researching the properties of steel and developing new steels in such areas as automotive engineering, oil and gas and energy production. - Discusses the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, diffusion and kinetics - Considers various transformations, including ferrite formation, proeutectoid ferrite and cementite transformations - Considers additional driving forces for transformation including nucleation and growth during austenite-to-ferrite phase transformations

The Influence of Prior Warm Rolling on Fracture Toughness of Heat Treated AISI 52100 Steel

The Influence of Prior Warm Rolling on Fracture Toughness of Heat Treated AISI 52100 Steel PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:

Pages : 0

Book Description
An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of prior warm rolling on AISI 52100 bearing steel in the hardened condition. Microstructural and mechanical properties of both standard and warm rolled 52100 were investigated. heat treatments, consisting of both conventional hardening treatments and isothermal transformation treatments, were conducted prior to fracture toughness, hardness, and tensile testing. Conventional hardening treatments resulted in martensitic structures with low toughness; prior warm rolling resulted in the rolled materials exhibiting both higher hardness and toughness than the standard 52100 in the hardened condition. Isothermal transformation treatments resulted in substantially improved toughness, especially in the material processed at 300 C. (Author).
