Thermal Conductivity and Emittance of Solid UO2
Author: R. Brandt
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nuclear fuel elements
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
Significant and important variations can be observed in material composition and properties of various species of U02, depending especially on the manufacturing process, mechanical and thermal treatment, and on the irradiation in the reactor. Consequently, substantial differences in porosity, uranium-to-oxygen ration, and, of course, impurities have an important influence on the thermal conductivity. The results on thermal conductivity measurements (some 300 publications) are compared with respect to both experimental conditions and condition of the samples used. The thermal conductivity of stoichiometric U02 with nearly theoretical density is well known up to the melting point with a maximum uncertainty of 15%. For the porosity dependence of the thermal conductivity predictive models can be used, taking into account the shape and distribution of the pores. It is difficult to find agreement between the calculated and the experimental results, for it is not possible to describe exactly the real pore stereometry by a distinct model. In many cases sufficient basic data required for numerical calculations are not given. Hence, a simple empirical formula for the porosity dependence of the thermal conductivity is given in this work. The Effect of Porosity on Thermal Conductivity
Basic Concepts in Nuclear Physics: Theory, Experiments and Applications
Author: José-Enrique García-Ramos
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030222047
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 263
Book Description
This book features material presented at the La Rábida 2018 International Scientific Meeting on Nuclear Physics, which was based on a well-known series of triennial international summer schools on Nuclear Physics organized from 1982 to 2003 by the Basic Nuclear Physics group at the University of Seville and latter, from 2009 to 2018, by the University of Seville and the University of Huelva. The meeting offered graduate students and young researchers a broad overview of the field of nuclear physics. The book includes contributions from invited speakers on topics such as a state-of-the-art nuclear shell model and selected aspects of mass spectroscopy. Other chapters present an introduction to shell model, a review of experimental nuclear reactions, a discussion of the theory of nuclear reactions and an overview of nuclear medicine. Further, the posters and seminars presented by students offer fresh perspectives on various problems current in nuclear physics.

Thoria-based Nuclear Fuels
Author: Dasarathi Das
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447155890
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 423
Book Description
This book presents the state of the art on thermophysical and thermochemical properties, fabrication methodologies, irradiation behaviours, fuel reprocessing procedures, and aspects of waste management for oxide fuels in general and for thoria-based fuels in particular. The book covers all the essential features involved in the development of and working with nuclear technology. With the help of key databases, many of which were created by the authors, information is presented in the form of tables, figures, schematic diagrams and flow sheets, and photographs. This information will be useful for scientists and engineers working in the nuclear field, particularly for design and simulation, and for establishing the technology. One special feature is the inclusion of the latest information on thoria-based fuels, especially on the use of thorium in power generation, as it has less proliferation potential for nuclear weapons. Given its natural abundance, thorium offers a future alternative to uranium fuels in nuclear technology. In closing, the latest information on conventional uranium and plutonium fuels is also provided.
