Solidification

Solidification PDF Author: Alicia Esther Ares
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 9535139053
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
Almost all processing of technologically important materials includes a process where liquid material is cooled to form a solid, called "solidification." In order to form a solid from an undercooled melt, the formation of crystalline nuclei and growth of these nuclei to form a solid are necessary. The process of an atom jumping from the liquid to the solid is a diffusive jump with a driving force. The book Solidification is logically developed through a careful presentation of the relevant theories and models of solidification occurring in a variety of materials. Mathematicians, chemists, physicists, and engineers concerned with melting/freezing phenomena will also find this book to be valuable.

Book Description
The design of aeronautical alloys requires the use of these particular alloys for their strength and ductility. These properties can be further enhanced by controlling the added alloying elements as well as the heat treatment parameters. The objective of the present work was to determine the effect of the interactions between element additions and heat treatment on the alloy microstructure and mechanical properties. The present study was carried out to investigate both the formability and mechanical properties of 6xxx alloy series. The slabs (7 x 11 x 1.5 cm each) were machined and homogenized for 10 h at 520 C, followed by air cooling. The results show that a -iron phase displays low formability and hinders deformation of the grains during cold rolling and leads to premature cracking. The cold rolled structure contains elongated grains with broken -Al5FeSi platelet fragments. In the Mn-containing alloy, the -iron phase is more easily deformable while addition of Sr does not improve the alloy behavior. With beryllium additions, the iron intermetallics precipitate in the form of small, globular -Al8Fe2SiBe script particles, in the interdendritic regions."

Comprehensive Materials Finishing

Comprehensive Materials Finishing PDF Author: M.S.J. Hashmi
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128032502
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 1467

Book Description
Finish Manufacturing Processes are those final stage processing techniques which are deployed to bring a product to readiness for marketing and putting in service. Over recent decades a number of finish manufacturing processes have been newly developed by researchers and technologists. Many of these developments have been reported and illustrated in existing literature in a piecemeal manner or in relation only to specific applications. For the first time, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, Three Volume Set integrates a wide body of this knowledge and understanding into a single, comprehensive work. Containing a mixture of review articles, case studies and research findings resulting from R & D activities in industrial and academic domains, this reference work focuses on how some finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies. These include applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials. There are three main distinct types of finishing processes: Surface Treatment by which the properties of the material are modified without generally changing the physical dimensions of the surface; Finish Machining Processes by which a small layer of material is removed from the surface by various machining processes to render improved surface characteristics; and Surface Coating Processes by which the surface properties are improved by adding fine layer(s) of materials with superior surface characteristics. Each of these primary finishing processes is presented in its own volume for ease of use, making Comprehensive Materials Finishing an essential reference source for researchers and professionals at all career stages in academia and industry. Provides an interdisciplinary focus, allowing readers to become familiar with the broad range of uses for materials finishing Brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time Includes case studies that illustrate theory and show how it is applied in practice

Optimisation of the Heat Treatment Cycles of CSIR Semi-solid Metal Processed Al-7Si-Mg Alloys A356/7

Optimisation of the Heat Treatment Cycles of CSIR Semi-solid Metal Processed Al-7Si-Mg Alloys A356/7 PDF Author: Heinrich Moller

Book Description
Conventional casting alloys Al-7Si-Mg A356/7 contain between 6.5 and 7.5% Si, together with 0.25-0.7% Mg and are used for critical castings in the automotive and aerospace industries. These alloys are also the most popular alloys used for semi-solid metal (SSM) forming due to good castability and fluidity imparted by the large volumes of the Al-Si eutectic. Despite their industrial importance, there is a lack of detailed research work revealing precipitate micro- and nanostructural evolution during aging of these alloys compared with the Al-Mg-Si 6000 series wrought alloys. This study characterises the heat treatment response of SSM-processed Al-7Si-Mg alloys in comparison with conventionally liquid cast alloys (investment casting and gravity die casting). It is shown that, provided that the maximum quantity of the alloy's Mg is placed into solid solution during solution treatment, and that the alloy's Fe content is within specification, the response to age hardening of Al-7Si-Mg alloys is independent of the processing technique used. The nanostructural evolution of Al- 7Si-Mg alloys after artificial aging with and without natural pre-aging has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography and correlated with hardness and mechanical tensile properties. The number densities and Mg:Si ratios of solute clusters, GP zones and ;?-needles were determined. The heat treatment response of SSM-processed casting alloys A356/7 alloys are also compared with SSM-processed Al-Mg-Si 6000 series wrought alloys, with the advantage of having similar globular microstructures. The high Si-content of the casting alloys compared to the wrought alloys offers several advantages, including a faster artificial aging response (shorter T6 aging cycles), higher strength for comparable Mg contents and less sensitivity to prior natural aging on peak strength. Finally, an age-hardening model was developed for the Al-7Si-Mg alloys, including a method of incorporating the effects of changes in Mg-content on the aging curves.
